Disney+ pricing and picture quality

With prices going up soon I’m trying to work out if it’s worth paying extra for the better picture and sound quality. The premium package has ‘up to’ 4K ultra HD and HDR along with Dolby Atmos sound. None of that means anything to me and I have no idea if my TV is even capable of it. It’s an LG but wasn’t expensive so almost certainly doesn’t have all the latest technology. It was also an ‘older model’ which is why it was discounted when I bought it 2yrs ago. The sound has always been poor on it. 

Am I likely to notice a drop in quality if I switch to the standard plan?

    Disney+ price went up weeks ago, it only affects you at your next renewal date.

    Note that you only get 4k/UHD content if a) the TV supports it in the first place, and b) it was actually made in 4k and is being delivered in 4k.  You get served what you can play, so if you don't have a 4k device you won't see any 4k content, and if your internet connection is poor for whatever reason and can't cope, it'll just drop back to what it can cope with.
  • If the TV sound is poor it is likely to stay poor even paying more. 

    You can search online to see what picture quality your TV is capable of dealing with. 

    A member of my family had her TV set up with oversaturated colours and was happy with standard definition.  I found it unwatchable.

    No.  You would know if your TV is 4K capable as it would have said on the box.  If you are using the TV's speakers then the Dolby Atmos is irrelevant as you need surround sound speakers for that.

    I have a 4K TV and streaming apps running in regular HD look just fine.
  • You can check your model of tv specs - I would have thought it would be 4k if it's only a couple of years old and is a decent size eg over 40in (very few non 4k tvs in last few years unless they are 32inch or smaller)
    We haven't got 4k so will likely downgrade to the middle package once our 3 month £2 trial ends. Though it does only allow streaming on 2 devices at once, unlike the top package which is 4 I think.
  • I always find these packages somewhat arbitrary, Netflix is the same. I do not want to stream to 4/6 devices at the same time, but once one has got used to 4k HDR content bog standard 1080p SDR looks noticeably worse. 

    They Disney+ situation is odd because they both increased the cost and downgraded the quality simultaneously, requiring one to pay even more to maintain the original quality.

    Thanks for the advice, everyone. I’m going to go with the standard plan. I don’t need to stream on multiple devices and it sounds like the picture won’t be any different on my tv.
