Oh look, a great example just now.

Would the OP have enough cash out and enough goodwill from friends to pay for everything for 42 days?
  • Thanks for the additional replies.
Before this happened to me, I always thought if a debit card was declined, it was your own bank who had declined it.
I have now found out that is not necessarily the case. It can be a problem with the receiving bank or even the store where you tried to pay. According to a subsequent conversation with Halifax, there were a lot of the same problem last Thursday and Friday. Whether that's true, of course I don't know.

@la531983, I always used to pay in cash but since the pandemic when they asked people to pay by card if they can, that's what I've done, so don't carry a lot of cash on me now. So enough cash for 42 days, definitely not. Goodwill from friends for 42 days, then yes.
The OP on the other thread said they were told 48 hours but had read it could be up to 42 days but didn't say where they read that.
I also now see the prudence in having another card or at least more cash on me, thank you.

    Thanks for the update.

Yes that is certainly true, there can be a general 'outage' of a card transaction acquirer system, which will affect all payments of a certain type temporarily, hasn't affected me for a few years.
