  • I don't know since when, but it's clearly written in the gov web pages and in the naturalization leaflet.

    Where?

Looking at the main page about entering the UK https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control/at-border-control there is nothing their to say a UK citizen must use a UK passport.

Indeed my wife travelled immediately after becoming a UK citizen and before she had time to get her first passport. Border Control confirmed there was no issues using her non-UK passport with its PR stamp

It's certainly preferred as I got a talking to for letting my daughter use her non-UK passport to enter the UK but I don't think they can actually refuse you entry if you have the right to live in the UK and can show it. Of course if you don't have a UK passport it's probably different but if you have one you should use it.

I'm assuming here that the second passport gives indefinite leave to remain... eg in my case its Irish so can live in the UK on it visa free etc.

The Mrs' non-UK passport own country is different though, you can come in on whatever passport you want but as a national to leave the country you legally must use your local passport. If you don't have one you have to get one.

Now I don't have much time and i'm abroad, but i remember very well the gov.uk web page reading "you must".
I'll search for it when I have more time. Things may have changed, too.

No it’s not mandatory to use your U.K. passport when you enter the U.K.  It’s preferred for various reasons but you don’t have to use it.
  • In the end all was good. No need to fight to make the flight company the EU passport.
I've reentered the UK on the UK passport.
I've also verified from CBP that the list of arrival and departures is correct.
