Forget the apps forget the IHD, read the actual meters wherever they are, daily/weekly whatever it takes

Take photos, record the evidence, work out your own bill

There can then be no argument

Stupid question alert, can the meter read usage incorrectly? It is a piece of technology after all and I assume subject to failure?

I used more than that on those days and am fearing a large but accurate bill.

Yes, meters can be faulty and over-read. It's uncommon but possible.

Yes meters can fail but it is the only technology everyone will take any notice of

Like me who reads the meter every week and has a few years records I would know before anyone if there might be a problem with the meter

    Was the heating on?
Of course not. It would all have to have been clocked up between 5:30-10pm
GCH combi boilers at one major manufacturer are rated at 24-40kW.

You averaged around 20kW per hour.

Most will be in first hour after turning on GCH as it warms the radiators and rhen starts to warm house it will derating then cycle on off.

Run a shower or bath or a sink full or two peaking at 15+kW.  2 10min showers could pull 5kWh etc.

Regularly use somewhere between 60-100kw of gas a day here depending on the outside temperature.. 4 Bed house, EPC B, gas is just heating and hot water.

If you've had a service some will often leave the flow temp at max, so run hotter and use more gas.

Have you got any number from last year you can compare with.
