High gas usage

Hi all,

I’m with Octopus and seeing some very high supposed gas readings on my app at the moment. We have supposedly used 348kwh of gas through 1st-5th of December, which cannot be right. One day shows 87kwh which is nearly 3x the apparant average UK daily use!

We are a two person house, careful with the heating and work 3 days away from home - so no heating on at all. We also have a Viessmann boiler which is only a couple of years old, and is efficient.

My question, is could we be suffering from a faulty meter, or perhaps my boiler isnt as efficient as I thought? I did report the meter earlier this month, as it didnt show any readings for a period of about two weeks and Octopus had to ‘nudge’ it.

Help appreciated, i’m fearing a large and inaccurate bill any day now…

    I used 90 kwh the other day.
    It's winter so you will be using more than the year round average.
    I used 311 kwh of gas from 1 to 5th Dec

    Yes, aware its winter and we’ve had a cold snap in addition. It’s still way higher than it should be though. Even when the house was completely unoccupied all day Monday, its still showing 68kwh. It cant be right.

    Of course not. It would all have to have been clocked up between 5:30-10pm

    So it was on for 4.5 hours?
    Quite possible on a cold day to use 87kwh in 4.5 hours if the boiler is flat out.

    No, probably on for 1.5 hours. 2 hrs maximum. I should say we also cook and shower using gas, but still…

    Are you reading the meter or your ihd as the ihd is not accurate or up to date.

    Octopus app. It seems all over the place though, as its showing zero gas usage for yesterday evening, but then is showing usage for this evening - so it’s not like its delayed. I will phone them tomorrow.

    Read the meter rather than the ihd.
  • Maybe try a third-party app to see what it says about usage, and more importantly if it tallies with when Octopus says it's been used.  If they tally then you know it's definitely not an Octopus glitch.
