  • Was hammering the night rate as it was alot cheaper i.e washing, hoovering, cooking so I could heat in the microwave at peak rate.

Neither vacuuming nor microwaving are going to make much difference to your electricity use.
Check your bills. How much electricity in kWh have you used on each rate over the past 12 months?

Now according to ofgems own website for E7 electricity only customers on typical usage of 3900Kwh per yr will increase £53 (4%) from £1219 per yr to £1272 per yr.
There is no such person like that.   It is best ignored.

Yes I totally agree, the point I was trying to make was as a below avg user my price increase will be way above £53 or 4% a year.

Hi John and Welcome to the forum ...

We did discuss this the other day and here is my calculation ... https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/80438914/#Comment_80438914.

No the microwave doesn't but the cooker and hob do. Also a 1000W hoover will use about 10p a session, along with the ironing all adds up. The bills are another bone of contention which EDF have had issues with this year, so much so EDF had awarded me £100 in goodwill payments & then the energy ombudsman awarded me another £125. So at the moment I don't know my actual kWh usage.

You need to also bear in mind that EDF have had incredibly beneficial night rates in some regions for a while now - your  new rates are far more in line with what customers of the likes of Octopus, certainly, have been paying throughout the past couple of years. Ultimately, if you can get 75% of your use to the off peak period, you will still be well below the kWh rate being paid by those on a single rate tariff.

now the cynical way of looking at things might well be that EDF have worked hard over the past while in setting their rates to a level to attract a LOT of E7 customers - and now that they have, they are fully intending to cash in on that customer base...
Eastern iirc wasn't the only EDF region that went sub 10p on e7 nights last winter for at least 3 months - not sure now if that was in Jan 2023 ( or was it earlier like Oct with first EPG discounting ?)

But other EDF regions normalised much sooner to rates offered by others in those regions.

To the c15p c35p split vicinity.

Eastern folk have therefore benefitted more - maybe 6 months.

And at least some like Dunstonh recently posted locked in to them with a year fix.

But like any E7 - only those using significantly more than the nominal 42% split really benefited  - as there was always a higher premium on day rates to comply with Ofgem cap levels.

How can this be right or am I missing something?
You are absolutely correct. The system is rigged against the consumer.
I previously noticed that Scottish Power had quietly increased the E7 night rate by 53% throughout the past year while ofgem price cap had actually decreased. The advice given here was to switch suppliers because EDF were offering much more competitive E7 rates for high off-peak users.

As an EDF E7 user, I'm disappointed that their off-peak rate for the SW is going up as much as it is, but it looks as though they're still going to be marginally cheaper than my alternative preferred supplier.

I like that positive approach. It's good news that this month EDF are ripping off E7 users a little bit less than other suppliers ... but the goalposts are constantly moving.
