Hello.
My Dad is 83 and is finding harder to get out of his armchair now and when he goes to sit in the chair he just falls into it as his knees do not bend that well.
I said we(3 kids) would get him a chair for xmas and was after a recliner/riser so it should make it easier for him to get in and out of the chair.
We were thinking of spending upwards of £500 max which to some is not a lot for a chair.
Has anybody got advice on buying/using this type of armchair please.

My Nan and grandad (live seperately) both got theirs from here https://www.careco.co.uk/furniture/seating/riser-recliner-chairs/
Grandad got the cheapest and it’s great, Nan got the most expensive and it’s great.IMPORTANT- Click vat relief if your dad is eligible and then you pay the price you see. Also bear in mind what side you require the remote and socket wire.
nan has https://www.careco.co.uk/kingsbridge-rise-recliner/

What do you mean "upwards of £500 max"?

You may find you can buy almost exactly the same chair in a local furniture shop, which hasn't got an inflated price because of the 'disability' label.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Competition Time, Site Feedback and Marriage, Relationships and Families boards. Also check if there's anything available second hand. Possibly through a "disability" shop or via freegle or FB market.
A quick google turned this up Second Hand Riser Recliner Chairs For Sale | Second Hand
We sold MiL's chair for about £200 which was a bargain as it was in excellent condition despite 5 years use. Original price was about £1800.
fyi - if it's a choice between 2 get one with leather rather than fabric upholstery. It keeps it much tidier and you are likely to get a nicer, cleaner chair particularly if going second hand.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. My father in law saw some of riser recliner chairs advertised in one of the catalogues that come with the Sunday papers. As ever they were ridiculously expensive because they are designed for older people and they take advantage of people. I looked on eBay and found some that I thought would be good for a few hundred pounds. I found that you need a two motor one to have all the benefits of it. I should also say that if your dad wants to lay back in it you need a bit of room at the back to recline it. You probably need 3 or 4 foot behind it to lay it back.
I found one on Facebook marketplace locally. £160 delivered and set up. It is plastic leather which was perfect because he used to spill things. He absolutely loved it and got on really well with it.When he went into a care home we gave it to a friend who had had a stroke. He was so pleased with it he and his partner cried. The chairs split into two parts for transportation. We delivered ours without taking it apart because we couldn’t see how to dismantle it.Have a look at second hand ones. You will get loads more for your money and help someone who has one to sell on.1 -
As someone else said, try looking on your local sites. I bought an electric recliner about 2 months ago from a charity shop and paid £20. It was in excellent condition.
I used it and at first thought it was great but then I was poorly and had about 3 days when I just sat in it and never got up apart from the loo and going to bed. I decided to get rid of it as the seat was too hard and it took up a lot more room than expected so I have donated it back to the charity shop it came from.
Today on our local Facebook free site there are 2 being offered free and both look in great condition. Obviously if you need it by Christmas then you may not be lucky but I would defiantly look at acquiring one second hand before paying silly prices.0 -
Thank you for all the replies.
I may have to give used/2nd hand chairs a miss unless i can get them delivered due to not having access to a car but i can still look at the links and see if rhere is some for delivery.0 -
Re delivery we have people on next door website that will deliver stuff for people who don’t have transportation. Sometimes freecycle people will deliver. We got our one in the back of our Mini when we gave it away. It wasn’t all in so we tied the tailgate and we have a big mini but it was delivered to us in a normal estate car. If you buy new don’t get hoodwinked into getting a made to measure one. There is quite a bit online about it being a scam.0
