car Insurance when policy holder has ill health
My partner due to brain operation and treatment has to inform dvla , we have been told up to two years he will not be able to drive. The car policy has 9 months to go , I’m a named driver , is the policy still valid for me or do I have to take action now and get my own policy? He is also the keeper , I’m scared the price is going to rocket 🥲

The only way to find out is to phone the company and inform them of the change of circumstance. You are now the main driver as your partner is temporarily unable to drive. Hopefully they can just amend the current policy.1

Read the policy docs. There will be some changes they have to know about immediately, others only at renewal.0

I'm the owner of our car, my husband is the main driver. My license has been temporarily revoked due to health issues. I rang our insurer (Direct Line) to inform them. They said "Thanks for letting us know, no changes to policy needed".I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Competition Time, Site Feedback and Marriage, Relationships and Families boards. A change to a named driver is unlikely to have a big impact whereas a change to the main driver is. Especially if the previously named driver is now going to have to become the main driver0 -
I was the policyholder and main driver on my policy with LV. I had a nasty medical episode which resulted in my doctors telling me I must not drive for at least 6 months. My insurers (LV) simply removed any cover for me to drive, whilst allowing my wife to continue to be covered. Other than that there were no changes they made.
When I was told by the medics I could drive again I phoned LV who reinstated the cover for me to drive. No changes in conditions or premiums.0 -
Switching main drivers between spouses/partners of similar age, experience and history is unlikely to make much difference to the premiums.0
