I imagine most of us took your comment as just light-hearted, @mmmmikey .

Thanks - for the avoidance of any doubt @MultiFuelBurner I certainly didn't mean to cause any offence and apologies if I did. I always make a point of reading your posts and threads and find myself agreeing with you most of the time and enjoying your own little quips here and there. To be honest I'm a bit bemused by the response and even on re-reading can't really see what I've said that might have caused offence. I was just trying to keep the thread light-hearted as these smart meter threads can often get quite acrimonious.

Indeed to whole point of this particular thread was a light-hearted attempt to find out if anyone at all loved their digital but dumb meter.  After two other threads in praise of other types, I felt I could not let the poor old digital but dumb meter get left out.

    I took it as light-hearted too :)

I liked our previous meter (digital but dumb) because it was simple, seemed reliable, and easy to read - no buttons to press, the display photographed really easily, and it just sat there doing its job for 4 years serving us well until we had to change meters to stay on Tracker.

At the time it wasn't broke so didn't need fixing, but the savings from staying on Tracker outweighed any feelings about our previous meter!  And the rest is for a different thread.

I'm afraid I never did love mine.  But AFAIK it never went wrong, despite looking suspiciously like a type that is known to be prone to malfunction.

Does anyone have a reason to love this type of meter or are they universally unloved?
Just out of interest , as a long term former meter reader, what was the type of meter known to malfunction ? One electric meter  I often found giving up and going blank screen was a small white digital meter made by Ampy . That turned out to be good news for many who liked the blank screen estimates so much they did their best to avoid   having  it replaced for years .
  • My old meter looked like this

I have erased the seal number (for no particular reason).  The ones prone to be faulty all look very similar in pictures I have seen but someone posted that their meter reader said it was a particular batch (2008?).  I think the identified fault was over-reading, but perhaps people kept quiet about the no-reading fault?

Ours was a 5235A as well, but certified - so I assume also manufactured - in 2015 and branded L&G (and it didn't have a decimal point).

  • I've never understood why what appears to be the same electricity meter can come branded as if from several different manufacturers.  Do you know, @SAC2334?

I think it is just a standard design, like G4 gas meters, that any manufacturer can make.
