A bit of balance not meant to be a troll let's hear from people not just those who wear tin foil hats :)

I like my mechanical meter because:

It always works and I have never (in over 50 years) had a mechanical meter that doesn't work. 100% of the time is the only acceptable percentage when it comes to energy supply.

Mechanical meters are essentially maintenance free.

I don't need an Internet connection or access to the 4G or 3G network.

I like to be in total control of devices in my home and don't like the idea of getting de-gassed or de-electrified by error or design.

I'm sure there's lots of other reasons so looking forward to hearing of the positives from mechanical meter owners.

I will also admit when eventually I do have a smart meter I will of course get used to it. If you love smart meters that's great. My main complaint about smart meters now (it's changed over time) is it's opened up the energy supply market to casino suppliers and resellers and buyers of energy (many on this forum) who either have 'free' electricty or they want to gamble and everyone else is paying literally on our bills for this.

Smart meters have turned energising our homes into a big game where we're all playing whether we want to or not. The musical chairs energy supply is not good for people who struggle to pay energy bills.

People using free, cheap, Or getting paid to use electricity are saving the Grid money, They either have to Pay generators to stop, Or pay to dump it in Europe if they don't want to buy it.

I love my mechanical meter too and also never had a problem with one in 50 years

I read them every week so I will be the first to know if there is a problem

I have peace of mind Knowing that no one can mess with them remotely

I also know I won't have to pay extra at certain times or save money at certain times as in my mind there can only be one winner

For every plus there has to be a negative and as we all know the consumer can't win

When the smart meter comes I will suck it up and get on with it

  • I genuinely have no idea if my old mechanical meters were accurate or not - the gas one, I strongly suspect may not have been, as the use had gradually increased year on year, in a way which would not seem logical allowing that our actual use was pretty specific. The electricity meter could well have gradually crept to a degree of inaccuracy over the years - there’s no way for me to have known this. I’m honestly mystified by those who claim they absolutely know that their meters are 100% accurate - how is this possible without testing? (And even with testing I’d be quite surprised at a real “100%” figure - as there is usually a degree of acceptable +/- tolerance.)

In the same vein, I have no idea if the smart meters we have in this house are actually accurate either - no reason why I should, beyond feeling that the use seems about right.

I love my mechanical meter because it brings back memories of an earlier time when trains were powered by steam engines.....

I am too old for that, although I have at points been told I was like a big squidgy teddy bear, so I went down the gym, which also helped keep me warm!

Steam trains provided a reliable service between Euston and Manchester ... and they were delivered on budget.

And would you want to go back to them being in use now? (My Mum always says that the one thing she can always tell about anyone who says “yes” in answer to this is that they are not old enough to remember actually travelling in steam trains!)
