    Why did you want to remove the connector and the black sleeve then? Just remove the rose and the pendant, put three two wires (blue and brown) coming down from the ceiling through the sleeve and connect the blue and brown ones to the connector.
  • It wasn't clear to me at the time what the black sleeve was being used for, and whether it was needed. Hence my question.

    I think it provides second layer of insulation to the mains wires if they aren't double-insulated (like in your case).
    CORRECTION: don't put the earth wire through the sleeve - terminate it separately.
