New PC faulty - refund agreed but here is the problem.

Options
Thank you , in advance.
Purchased Dell PC - faulty from new, persevered with woeful tech support remote assistance for over a month to no avail.
Several hours spent installing software , settings etc. onto the machine that now needs to be returned for refund, -  but unable to create recovery medium due to one of the issues  with the machine.
To transfer settings and software I will; need to purchase software, ( EASUS PCTRANS) .
Can I recover the cost of this as I think it is unreasonable for me to have to spend further hours reinstalling all software and settings onto another machine due to the failure of my purchase.
Pc was purchased  with Amex, but they say they cannot pursue it.
All comments gratefully received.
Thank you ,  Tim

You can't normally claim for consequential loss but you can ask if they will make a goodwill gesture.
If you get a full refund that's not a bad result and will put you in the position you were before all of this.
Are you sure there isn't a free or trial version of the software you are looking for?

Have Dell said they won't pay for it? Have you asked? It seems a reasonable think to request, but normally the T&Cs will absolve them from paying consequentual costs of the PCs failure. You might check the T&Cs to be sure. An ex-gratia payment is about all you can expect.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I think you're overthinking it, the only thing you absoutely must be able to transfer is your data, which of course you should have backed up anyway, and which you'd probably want to remove from the PC before you return it to Dell. Software can be reinstalled from where you obtained it in the first place, which these days will be primarily downloads, and settings recreated during the software setup - if there's anything you're uncertain about write down the current settings or take screen shots.
  • Agreed with the comment from Silicon. Creating a restoration media (which will transplant one install to another PC) is nice but not mandatory. Copying data should be as simple as copying files from your PC to a device like a memory stick.

You can of course ask Dell to help with this - in fact some service agreements will have that included. But unless there’s a reason you can’t just copy and paste files to a memory stick, I think you’ll be hard pressed to force Dell to pay for the software. The alternative is to ask Dell if you can keep the hard drive/SSD and just reinstall the hardware to a new device. They may charge you for the component or they may just write it off (I would hope the latter as I would imagine they destroy storage media upon return).

PCTRANS is free, but for a limited quantity of files or data.
I suspect that the OP has used up his free trial in confirming that it would do the job for his particular machine, which is exactly the purpose of the free trial. The minimum payment for further use is about £40 for 1 month unlimited use.

There are however lots of alternatives to that software including many that are free. The OP should explain why if PCTRANS works, CloneApp (which is free) would not work equally well. Or, for that matter, FastMove, Zinstall WinWin, PC Data Back, etc?

This topic might be a little technical for this forum.
Posting in Techie Stuff https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/techie-stuff might be better.

I'm not sure that insisting that a computer retailer pays for the OP's subscription to some third party software is a consumer right.
If Dell agree to repair or replace the faulty machine their technicians are able to port the drive's contents to the new SSD

Thank you for your comments.. I wasn't aware there w\as a trial version of pctrans ,  reference to it was the result of a google search. The alternatives mentioned are gratefully received and I will look into them.
