  • We last moved (in 2018), hired a 7.5tonne lorry for 24 hours, collected l lorry Thursday afternoon, loaded it up that evening, drove to new house Friday morning, unloaded everything Friday afternoon and had the lorry returned to hire depot before end of day Friday.... We had the help of my 65yr old dad for loading / unloading. Hire cost £150 for 24hours, easily fitted the contents of our 4bed house with some careful packing.... Had several removal quotes at the time coming in well over £2k.... Carefully chose a hire depot that was halfway between the two properties (we moved 50miles).

We were quoted recently for a move of about 130 miles, doing our own packing, for approximately £3500. This was for a 2 bedroom bungalow but with a fairly full garage, garden furniture and pots.  The removal company would have done the packing and unpacking but I don’t know how much extra that would be.
i would recommend choosing a company that will come to see your items before quoting.  We tried a couple for which we had to complete an online estimate, room by room.  These were very confusing and it became clear that it’s  easy to underestimate how many packing boxes would be needed.
The company that visited quickly realised we needed a bigger van.
We moved from Northants to Dartmoor a few years ago.  It was an overnight stop so wasn’t cheap.  We used a firm that had good reviews and we had close friends who had used them.  I would advise getting packing done for, as a minimum,  kitchen things, glassware, anything breakable because if something is damaged and you packed it yourself you may find the insurance company won’t pay some or all of it.

When we moved to Northants it was only 12 miles so we asked them to do all the packing so we disappeared off to lunch in the tiny village we were moving to.  It wasn’t a great deal extra for a full pack and they arranged to collect the boxes at our convenience.  Obviously if you move a distance they can’t collect them but put them on Freecycle and you may get swamped  :D
  • I am trying to sort out a removal firm for my move. I have rung around a few companies but they say they don't do long-distance moves, are fully booked on that date, etc etc. It is driving me insane.
Has anyone used those comparison sites that you get multiple quotes from like compare my move and removal reviews? I think at least I would get quotes from firms that could actually move me but will I get bombarded with spam? I know I could set up an email just for the quotes but it is a faff.
