Minimum spec for broadband please?

My tenant has decided to get connected to the internet but doesn't even have a PC. He doesn't have the money to just go out and spend.

Can anyone advise what the absolute minimum spec is for broadband is please?

Thanks

Why does he want to have an internet connection then? Is he planning on getting a pc?

aye, anything over 800mhz will do the job just fine. free on freecycle nearly every week.
even an older PC will work, but will be slower on the net.
    Get some gorm.

My Virgin ISP gives a min spec but I've used an old laptop 233mhz, 64mb ram and Firefox.
It could be slow at times but still much faster than dialup.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • It should really be running Windows 98 SE, Windoze 95 SR2 and 98 original just wouldn't be suitable for most BB suppliers

That's what I was wondering about.

My old Windows 98 PC has been promised. It is a 566MHZ pc but it will be connected to some lab equipment at a university, so I suspect he will be looking at something better.

He's a DSS tenant. Apparently he can get social loans that are interest free. He reckons he can get around £450 and pay it back at around £6 per week - not bad eh?

He's been promised my old printer, but needs everything else.

As for freecycle, there are not a huge number of PCs in my local group.

    Yes he is.

He can't work due to health reasons so I think he just wants to broaden his horizons.

  • You can buy rather high spec new pcs for very cut down prices now.. i work in IT and would never spend more than 300 on a new PC. My current PC cost 280 from the Dell outlet store. What he should NOT do is get Vista. Don't get it, it'll half the performance and waste his money. Windows 2000 or XP are good though.

Would he be up to building his own PC? He could get PC components from freecycle and learn a new skill.
  • Your tenant does not need to pay for WIndows. He can get on the Internet using a free Linux system such as Puppy Linux. This should run on your old PC.

I don't think he's up to building his own PC.

I can give him a monitor and a printer, and possibly a scanner. So it's the base unit and a keyboard he will need.

In the meantime I may suggest he finds out about some free IT courses that will be in the area.
