Swapping number issue
Hello everyone,
I currently have a sim only rolling contract on ID mobile, but have found a phone contract via mobiles.co.uk that is on ID mobile.
As it is not an upgrade, I’d be unable to keep my current number by purchasing the new deal.
However, if I port my number over to a new free sim on Giffgaff, I can then port the number from Giffgaff to the new ID mobile phone contract.
Has anyone done this before? I’d very much like to keep my number.
I’ve looked online and it sounds possible. I’m wondering if there is a time limit for porting numbers on a new contract? So for example a month into the new contract could I port the number from the Giffgaff sim?
Thanks in advance.

Perfectly possible to do this kind of "triangular" SIM swap.
Couple of points, try to keep the two ID mobile numbers on different accounts, if you need an account for the new SIM sign up for a new one with a different email address.
Giffgaff need a minimum topup of £10 to activate their "free" SIMs, Asda is only £5 (and some (me) have done swaps with no topup at all).
There's no restriction on when you can request a number swap via a PAC code, although the PAC code itself is only valid for a month once requested and generated.1 -
Perfect thank you. My plan was to request the pac code close to my plan renewal and swap, but purchase the new contract in the next few days.flaneurs_lobster said:Perfectly possible to do this kind of "triangular" SIM swap.

so how did you do it for free? Would you recommend an asda sim as opposed to Giffgaff?0 -
Was 3-4 years ago so may not now work, Asda SIMs are supplied pre-activated with a small amount of credit (or they were). Port your old number to the Asda SIM, then request the PAC code by SMS which was supplied by SMS to the phone. Don't do this back-to-back, give everything a day or so between each transfer request.Coupiee said:

Have you got an active Giffgaff SIM? I'd use that rather than a new SIM as long as the number is unwanted. The only reason for recommending Asda is the £5 minimum topup and the ease of getting them if you've got a nearby Asda.1 -
No id ordered one, not thinking about the activation price. I’ll order one from Asda to save a fiver - thank you for the advice.flaneurs_lobster said:

There have been reports of asda mobile refusing to issue a pac unless the sim has been topped up after the port-in. Personally I would try a £1 sim from rwg;

I thought I'd read somewhere that the freebie Asda port was no more, hence my qualification.savergrant said:There have been reports of asda mobile refusing to issue a pac unless the sim has been topped up after the port-in. Personally I would try a £1 sim from rwg;

I have transferred numbers out of asda without topping up, but it wasn't a number which I had ported to them. The report seemed to be that asda were aware of numbers being moved to them and then away repeatedly.0
