Morning.

I want other peoples opinions as I feel like I’m using a lot of money on gas. I’m with British Gas and have pre payment meters. Top up on the app. Gas cost me around £280 per month and electricity around £80 pm. Is this right?? What are other people paying, I spoke with my brother in law who is with utilita and only pay £60 pm for gas and £40 pm for electric.
It’s a semi detached 3 bed house, 2 adults 1 baby. Please can someone help or guide me on ways to reduce this or if I’m able to switch or is there no point due to current situation in world

What are your unit rates and how many kWh are you using, is there any debt on the meter? Are you using smart prepayment meters, or old fashioned key/card/fob meters?

    Safeguard PAYGv2 - GAS
    Standard (PP) unit rate
    6.616 p per kWh
    Standing charge
    34.209p per day

    Safeguard PAYG - ELECTRIC
    Standard (PP) unit rate
    26.080 p per kWh
    Standing charge
    58.150p per day

new meters, no fob or key

There is no debt on gas meter. The only issue is we had to get them changed couple years ago and the gas meter is far away from the other unit so I have to manually go outside and enter the top up code.
  • On the basis of those rates it would appear that you are using a very large amount of gas and a high amount of electricity. Do you have the heating on a lot, do you use lots of hot water?

The heating doesn’t even come on a lot. That’s what I don’t understand, we had a new boiler last year aswell. I was paying way less and just feel like it keeps getting higher each month. Iv calculated it I put the heating on, it’s around £10-11 a day just for gas and that’s maybe putting heating on twice in the day for 4 hours total. Recently I tried setting the thermostat to 18.5c so it comes on and goes off when temperature is hit. That used the same amount £10-11 per day.
  • Hi,
do you have meter readings over various periods?

No meter readings. How do I get readings? My gas meter doesn’t talk to the main unit and doesn’t show on smart meter. I just wanna know if what I’m paying is right or is there a problem

I have this issue for many years since BG forcefully changed to prepayment meter. I have a debt on it too.

I seem to use a lot of credit and my debt hasn't gone down that much, in the years i've had the meter the debt should have gone down by £850, i've checked with them today and it's gone down by £400.

I had a new worcester boiler fitted last year.

My gas credit use in summer was £60 a month with hardly any heating use, last month it was £70 and this month £90. We don't cook every day too.

There's no transparency as I don't know how much of my credit is to gas and how much to debt. It's a smart meter and i top up online.

But the OP's £280 a month for gas seems very excessive. Maybe there's a gas leak outside?

I'm with another supplier for electricity and that is double the gas price.

I'm paying for electricity only what others pay for both as dual fuel. My monthly use is estimated at £144 a month for electricity yet neighbours pay that for dual fuel with gas.

I've taken issue with both suppliers as last winter in Dec and Jan I paid £600 a month for both, £400 electricity and £200 gas and i don't want a repeat this year.

I think on prepayment we can only check credit, there's no meter reading for gas use or bill.

your gas meter is your smart meter, the gadget is the IHD, In House Display.
