One of the staff showed me how to get the laptop to take the WiFi signal by going into phone settings and creating a WiFi bridge and it worked fine.

So resolved in a slightly different way

We have this occasionally at our office. It's nothing to do with number of devices per user (there's no list of MAC addresses and who has what address)

    It's two issues.

A longstanding Android bug *mostly Samsung* that causes either an unable to connect or Connected but no Internet message. This causes repeat attempts to connect which impacts issue 2

Unlike a home setup there are repeaters or mesh connections  throughout the buildings. Each has a limit to the number of users. If too many people are in one place either they can't connect or the data rate is so low that the device thinks its not a usable connection.

If you think, in an office environment each employee could easily have three connections (laptop, work phone, personal phone). Also, in your case out of hours there could well be backup and update loads on the network.

How we solved it - added more nodes to the network.

It seems as though this was a deliberate move by the organisation.

They've now  removed that WiFi signal for out of hours workers (we're not directly employed by them).

The daytime staff have access to another WiFi signal that's password protected

So back to using out own mobile data!

Do you need to use your own data to do work for your company or is it just to pass the time and surf the net?

The WiFi was for time pass/surfing and not work related.  Which is not a problem at all.

However this weekend I did hear that one of the out of hours staff abused the WiFi 'privilige' a while ago so they might have belatedly responded to that.

Ah yep one spoils it for everyone

You will have to chat up one of the day staff to try to get it or hope someone has wrote it down somewhere!
