currys careplan refund of £673

We bought a kenwood dishwasher in Aberystwyth store on 30/4/2011 paid £289.99
The sales assistant must have put us on a care plan (which was not asked for) as we never take out insurance.....
12 years later we realised we were still paying £4.49 per month for the care plan ( so paid out total of £673.50!!)
the dishwasher was defunkt years ago!
Have taken this up with Currys who say we have no claim as we cancelled the Direct Debit to them (3rd Oct 2023)
I think this is totally fraudulent and will advise you not to buy anything from currys....very disapointed with their service

do I have any chance of a refund??

First of all, you were right the first time, its a care plan not insurance... Currys spend a lot of time/money ensuring it's not insurance.

12 years is a hell of a long time to go between checking your bank statements! Appreciate these plans are intentionally low value monthly fees just to reduce the chances of people putting too much effort into working out what they are but it appearing on 144 statements before you notice it really is a bit too much.

Whilst I agree with the principle of "never buying insurance" I think the prospects of you remember exactly the conversation at the time 12 years ago now is slim. I likewise don't normally buy careplans but there have been times where there have been promotions meaning its cheaper to buy with and then cancel the care plan afterwards and in those cases I ddi buy them (and didn't always remember to cancel as early as I couldn't have).

If you speak to your bank about a DD guarantee/indeminty claim... they may struggle to believe you over the 144 statements and think its buyers remorse instead but ultimately they should refund you the last 6 months which is better than nothing.

Not really, given it has taken you 12+ years to notice. So you have no grounds for a refund. Given you have to sign for these plans.

Fact is the DD has been going out that long, it really is user beware. Can't blame retailer for you not noticing, I'm afraid.

You could not have been put on a Care Plan paid by direct debit without giving Currys your bank details.

Pity you didn't spot all those £4.49s going out every month and wondered what you were paying for.
You could have claimed a repair or replacement.

How did they get your details to create the direct debit?  You must have signed a direct debit mandate and provided bank details.  If you didn't, then it is fraud, and you should contact the police.

    I'd check first, though...

Not forgetting that there is no time limit on claiming the refunds, unlike chargebacks. So in effect the whole amount could be claimed. But if Currys have a signed DD mandate, expect to be redebited.

In these circumstances companies will often have a policy of refunding three or six months payments.

But as you say, it unlikely any bank or firm will believe that this has not been spotted in the past decade. And as there will be a direct debit mandate and likely a signed apucation form then I think the OP should accept whatever gesture of goodwill Curry's eventually offer.

Ironically, it would have been better to take out insurance as there would have been annual reminders and a maximum term of 60 month.

Bank will not refund a DD. Unless it falls under DD indeminty
