Exceptions for porting to fibre

Options
Having been notified (in a weaselly fashion) of a second price increase this year from NOW Broadband, I wanted to switch and retain our existing phone number, which we have had for 36 years, but find that
  • Sky tell me I can't transfer from NOW to them - annoying, but not totally surprising.
  • Vodafone processed my order but tell me that ours is one of a few, exceptional phone numbers that cannot be ported to fibre connections.- I can find mention of rare exceptions but can find no clue as to the circumstances leading to this. Maybe I'm being spun a yarn...
  • Only Shell seem to be offering new non-fibre broadband at reasonable cost, and their ratings are abysmal.
Anybody have any comments/suggestions on these points please?

Ignore Shell's broadband ratings. Their xDSL is the same as every other supplier's xDSL, their router is OK and their website works.

  • Port your existing phone number to a VoIP service then it will be yours regardless of who any future ISP is (or even if you don't have one)

Is KT3 a postcode? VOIP is cloud hosted so is not location dependant. For providers, look at Andrews & Arnold or Vonage for Home.

Shell's website is next to useless for anything other than billing and chat doesn't work but phone contact does and if you're having problems just be persistent if you get the indian call centre try again later you'll get the better one eventually who do actually know what they're talking about the service is basic but it does function
