Not told of flight schedule change

Please can someone help me with an issue regarding compensation for a schedule change we were not informed about. 

I recently flew with my family to USA with Virgin. My original booking for the return leg had a schedule change and I was informed by email AND text message on 5/8. I called on 13/8 and changed the flight. The new flight was VS10 scheduled to leave JFK at 8.30pm on 28/10 and arrive at Heathrow at 7.50am on the 29/10. However, when I logged on to check in the day before the flight, I noted a schedule change - the departure time had changed from 8.30pm to 23.59pm. 

Virgin are saying they informed me of the schedule change on 19/8. I did not received any notification from them (I have checked text messages and junk mail too). I just don’t believe they did inform me - I got their email and text about the previous change so why would I not get this one. 

Anyway, everything I read says a schedule change not notified at lease 14 days before departure gives a right to compensation in under UK261. But I’ve read the regulation and I just can’t see where there is a reference to schedule changes or compensation being due. Could someone point me in the right direction please so I can quote it to Virgin.

UK261 only grants compensation rights in the event of flight cancellations, substantial delays (on the day) or denied boarding, but there is no right to compensation for schedule changes:
