Correct use of thermostat?

Looking for some advice please.

I work from home 3 times a week and have obviously found it very cold lately with the weather changing. I have been putting it on as and when needed because I live alone and don’t want ridiculous bills.

However, it takes absolutely forever to heat back up (old house) and wonder if I am wasting more money this way because the boiler is working harder to heat the house back up.

so would it be easier to set the thermostat to say 17 or 18 and just leave it as that all day? And then turn off when I go to bed? I am wondering whether this would be best as it would then trickle on and off rather than starting from scratch?

looking for the most cost effective way of keeping my house warm.

thanks

I live alone and put mine on as and when needed (well Alexa does)

I bought the Hive mini, set the heat at 20 when I feel cold 15 at other times

When I am out I can see what the temperature is at in my flat so If it's cold I can turn it on before I head home

Funnily enough been looking at hive mini’s. Was it easy to set up?

Experts say if is cheaper to put the heating on when you need it, rather than on all day.

My son (gas registered) wired it to the boiler and I did the rest

So easy to operate, I just say Alexa set the heat to 20 or 15 when I go to bed

So easy when it's too cold to get out of bed she can switch it on for you

If you want to try heating yourself, rather than the whole house, here's a thread with ideas:
And a recent discussion of some of those options:

Yes you will use lots of gas in the first 2-3 hrs heating back up, take lots of gas reading to compare blasts vs long and steady, Easier with a working smart meter and an app.

Is it a condensing boiler, modern rads? Your flow temp could be set a little too low for convenience but good for efficiency.

You can't really compare a house vs a flat, small vs big, well insulated vs not.

Welcome to the world of auto correct!

    "Meaning of effeminacy in English
the state of behaving, looking like, or having qualities similar to a woman: Interest in clothes was taken as a sign of effeminacy. The "effeminacy" attributed to her work is not the sign of her own gender, but of a cultural taste. "

Only heat the room where you need to work, hopefully you have TRVs on all radiators so turn them down in empty rooms and open up the bedroom valve for a while before you go to bed.

Keeps doors closed and make sure there are no cold draughts from the cooler rooms.

Having the boiler on all day will use more gas but what price is your own comfort ?

Unless you have a damp problem then it's better to have it on low all day as the heat has to get through the damp.
