Siemens dishwasher whirring but no lights coming on

No lights come on when you press the power button but I can hear a whirring and something is moving inside.  I have checked the drains are clear, and the pump is clear of any debris, as far as I can see.  The impeller is moving freely. When I switch off at the socket the whirring stops.  I have checked the drainage pipe at the back is clear.

When I remove the little white cover to the impeller and switch the dishwasher on, I can see a small amount of water appearing suggesting something is working.

The machine is 9 years old, so maybe not worth repairing, unless it’s a simple fix.  Anyone any ideas as to what else I can try?

thanks

  • Take the inlet hose off at both ends & check the little filter in each end.
    Could be blocked with debris.

Just a guess, could be leaking, float in the base detects water so turns the pump on, nothing else will work. Pull it out, lay it on its side and see if you get a wet floor.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Yep, a lot of water came out.  Assume this isn’t going to be a cheap or quick fix?

    Thanks

Have checked the in and out hoses, all are ok, so they aren’t the problem
  • I had a problem with my Bosch dishwasher last year where it detected water in the base of the machine, the pump was constantly trying to drain but if I remember correctly the lights wouldnt display.

This potentially could be a problem with your machine. The easiest way to check is if you have aquastop on the end of the water inlet hose

If you do, I turned the dishwasher upside down to drain the water from the base then turned the machine back on and it hasnt happened since.

My likely cause was too many bubbles from the soap detergent.

No aqua stop on the inlet hose, just a standard one.

The dishwasher now switches on, lights come on, and it looks like it would work, but am wary of running a program, if I am going to end up with a whole load of water on the floor.  Am wondering if I should try a quick 15 minute rinse program, and see what happens.
