I've used Open Office, Libra Office as free alternatives.
I found both very good but I sometimes have to send files to people who only have MS office (convert to Word at the library)

I find for some time Open Office won't do this. I can (thanks to the folks on here) save as PDF file which will attach and can be read by a recipient but it's a pfaff and can't be altered last minute.

Libra Office used to convert well to MS Word. Haven't been able to try recently.

The thing is how complex do you need it? Are you wanting to use the complete suite?
Or is it just word docs?

Following the thread as I need something newer

Is it not possible to set the default document type to .docx rather than .odt (or whatever their default is)?
Or, could you 'save as' into .docx?

And while you're asking that, has anyone found a free alternative which will do MailMerge?
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Many of my clients (non-business) use Open Office and Libre Office. Most seem to prefer Libre Office.

Both applications are excellent and completely open source.

As far as I know, they all do.

Certainly Google, OpenOffice and Libre Office do.
