New tablet - connecting to wifi

I've been gifted a tablet. Samsung SM-T560
Tried to connect to my home wifi which shows fine on the list but when typing the password in the Connect button stays greyed out.
Please, what can I try?

Router ok  as I'm typing this
Something was mentioned about having to sign in to Google (which seems to be the default on the screen) to use but not sure what that applied to.
I was hoping to try not to do that. I've managed to use an old kindle for internet (google, duck etc) without signing into Amazon.

  • You shouldn't have to sign into Google to sign into a wifi network. The only reason I can think is that you are typing the password incorrectly. Could a case sensitive letter be wrong? Is airplane mode definitely disabled on the tablet?

    Yup. Flight mode off.
Thanks for the info about Google. It's only to be used for a few forums and email.
My email recenty refused to load on the old kindle and the utilities mean I need quick access, assume because device too old for new updates.

The password should be correct. I have vague memories of having to reset the router ages ago but believed I still had the original password.
I'll double check on the laptop docs but setting that up won't be till this evening. Sun is shining for first time in a month and want to be out in it.

Also, check that the tablet was reset before you try to add your WiFi and set it up.

Think it was but I was so stunned by being offered a tablet + data when I'd only gone in for advice, and the guy had a stinking?cold that I was sort of not paying attention  :)

Been out of touch for so long with retirement and lockdowns I've forgotten what to ask.
So I'll double check that. Wednesday is the next community hub.
I tried scanning and trying the password again but no luck.

Could be to do with Wi-Fi - 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz - your tablet is quite old and may not support 5GHz - you may have to turn off 5ghz in your router as they both broadcast the same name - I had this with an early smart plug.
once connected at 2.4 you can turn 5 GHz back on

the problem may be that the 'new' tablet here appears to a 2015  Galaxy tab E   based on the model number given in the OP

the fact it  runs Android 4.4 Kitkat or Android 5 Lollipop may mean that a modrern router  deems it  insufficiently secure

Try pressing the WPS button on your router and then connecting to the wifi network.

    Thanks for the ideas.

The tablet didn't connect at the hub where I went for advice either. And their wifi will be bang up to date.
That's where 'log into Google' came from because he was puzzled.

I don't have buttons to press for wps or change of GHz . It's totally basic bit of plastic but does the job.
I did notice the wps light isn't on.....but laptop and kindle are working.

Another thing, there is a pin for the wps.
This is different to the password for the network which was what I was using
Am I using the wrong one?

  • Make sure the time and date on your tablet are correct.

If the tablet has been factory reset, check that the keyboard is set to the correct region.
The password may contain, e.g. "@" which is in a different place depending on the keyboard language settings.
    Move along, nothing to see.
