Question for o2 customers

I’m on a sim only plan. It expired a few year ago so I’ve upgraded to another sim only plan.
Will a new credit agreement be set up on my report or does it carry on with the same one as I don’t want o2 to appear twice on my reports due to my OCD and anxiety that something will go wrong.

they said they’ll run a hard search aswell but nothings shown up yet. Although I heard sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t on just sim only upgrades it’s random but tells you first and it told me so I guess that’s coming.

Likely it will be a new entry on your credit history.

The previous contract should show as satisfied with a zero balance outstanding and that will stay on the credit history for 6 years since it finished.  No one is going to go back and amend this.

The new one will show as ticking along nicely as long as you make your payments each month as agreed.  Should you run into any issues contact O2 immediately and make a plan to remedy the situation.  (i.e. no money one month and so you might agree an extra payment in 2 weeks time when you get paid)  The blip will show as a yellow light on your credit history but when you are back on track it will show as a green light.  As long as that continues there should be no problem from another lender should you need credit elsewhere.

Thank you! Will the old one still say active or will it change to closed?

ive never missed a payment. I just found a deal for £5 less a month with double the data I have now so I just went for it without thinking about anything.

strangely enough it says I haven’t paid Septembers and October’s on credit karma but clear score says I’ve paid September and October’s - do they take different timeframes to update?

i mostly wanted to apply for a current account but didn’t want this affecting me.

Hey OP, I work for vmo2 in store, SIM only agreements will not show as a loan agreement on your credit report, as there is no CCA involved for a device, your SIM account will not change ie no account will be closed then opened, the existing account showing on your credit reports will just continue. If there was a CCA involved for a device, this would show as a loan agreement on your report, an upgrade would show closed and settled, then a new loan agreement would appear to reflect the balance owed on the new device.

It sounds like you are on the newer billing system and you would undergo an eligibility check (soft search) then a hard check upon upgrade. Hope this helps!

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Yes thanks. Yes im on the new billing system. i never used to be but when i upgraded my current sim only as it expired to a new sim only through uswitch it transferred me to the new one but when i ring up to ask i just get passed around because the people cant access my account due to the new system.

So to clarify if i read it correctly; Since i was on a sim only and upgraded to another sim only (same number) for a new 12 month contract. It will just continue like normal on my credit file with the same account and its history? it wont add another o2 account aswell/instead of the original one that got added in 2020 with the account type being "Telecommunications supplier"

  • Sorry for all the questions. I get worried about random things.

If I read it correctly the advice is it will show as a hard check but there will not be a loan agreement referenced. I guess that if you are 'upgrading' (paying more per month) they will be justified in checking affordability.
  • I have multiple sim only lines as I manage them for other family members. Whenever I’ve updated an existing sim only plan and retained/upgraded the same mobile number that was already with O2, there has been no further entries on my credit file. It’s only when I’ve added a new line/ported a number in from another provider that O2 has done a further hard search.
  • I have an o2 30 day sim only contract, this was taken out via VM nothing was showing on my credit file until it was moved to o2 .. I don’t have any hard searches by either VM or O2 for this sim.
  • Customers who are on the "legacy" old billing system will undergo no credit check changing to a newer sim only deal, only if upgrading to a deal involving a device plan ie a fixed sum loan agreement. Customers who are on the newer billing system like the OP is (which everyone is gradually being moved over to in batches) undergo a credit search regardless, albeit a lower pass threshold for sim deals vs device plans obviously.

This makes sense. This account was migrated over from Virgin Mobile, no credit check will have been done, if you do "upgrade" the info above will apply. FYI most ex VM accounts are still on the old legacy billing system, for now at least!
