What would be the best (most reliable at a decent price) for a large parcel, sizes given above please?

Weight 4.8 kg with a value of £85

I listed the item with 'other courier' as i didn't have a box at the time or the item and had even considered sending it as two separate parcels. I just selected 'other' and estimated a price of £10

I would prefer to drop it off at the Post Office but don't know the price .. I have been in the PO before with folk sending parcels and have heard some eye-watering prices. I usually send with EVRi, but maybe this is too big or too valuable to risk

  • Have a look at Royal Mail 48. Up to 10kgs & covered for £150 is £6.49. I buy postage online, print the label & just take to a post office….

Oh that's brilliant .. many many thanks

Do you have to book via the Royal Mail website or one of the Parcel2go  type sites.. I've used these before, but not for several years now .. probably don't even have account now

Personally I'd go direct to RM

Royal Mail Click & Drop | Send an item - Click. Save. We Collect

Book RM48 , and get it collected on Monday.

  • I just print the label, stick on the package & take to a post office of my choice ; I do not have a postage account - just buy via Ebay....
We rarely see a postie (possibly once a week) as they're very short staffed in our area & I sincerely doubt anyone would appear in time to collect the parcel...

Obviously do what's best for you, but just so you know collections have to be booked so someone would come.  You also don't need an account to buy it via RM, you just put your details in.

It’s exactly as Spoonie_turtle says, the postie doesn’t randomly choose to collect- it’s booked in advance. I’ve started booking packages for Monday already.

RM know how heavy the parcel or entire collection is, so if I book a load of light items my usual postie takes them. If it’s heavy, or I’m not due any post they send a van. The postie arrives , scans your labels ( I pre print mine but they can be supplied by postie) and a short while later you get an email confirming collection. I use the system a couple of times a week when I know I’m going to be home, I use it for everything from large letters to parcels, they even took a standard letter for me last week.

    it’s a brilliant service I can’t praise it enough.

Collection for tracked 48 and 24 are free at the moment too.  We just get the odd ones where they forget to come and/or forget to scan. I'm just about to take one to the sorting office as they forgot to come yesterday.

At the moment collection for everything is free. On eBay you can add on a free collection on anything, even a letter, once you have bought the label look at the RH side of page under the address for the link.
