I sent a new jacket, and the buyer sent me photos showing the same (?) jacket badly damaged!

I agree this looks like a different jacket. It looks like wear and tear and certainly not damage from being in a parcel. How much did she pay?

I'd be doing some Facebook/Instagram stalking. See if you can find the buyer's social media accounts and see if there are any photos of her wearing the jacket in past photos.

Once you're sure it's a different jacket then I'd reply saying that unfortunately she has sent the wrong jacket back, and could she send a pre-paid envelope to have this one returned, and then send the correct one back. Make references to the stitching being different. You could push your luck and say that it is also missing the UV anti-theft marking that you put on your jacket.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

But the buyer doesn't know that.

I think it's better to keep things honest and not stoop to what potentially the buyer has done.

yes and just to say if the jacket is different ie the buyer is deliberately returning a different one then they are committing an offence under the fraud act.
Exactly this. Once you receive it and check it, you could let the buyer know you are reporting this to the police as fraud. See how quickly they change their story. If Ebay don't back you up, there is always the small claims court (Moneyclaim online) once you have gathered evidence but you need to be prepared to travel to the defendants local court for any hearing (although it's very unlikely it would progress that far).

I've been an Ebayer for almost 25 years and have noticed it's not as good for private sellers any more. Ads on Gumtree and FB Marketplace also seem to attract a whole load of scammers rather than genuine buyers so more of my unwanted stuff is going to charity shops or the recycling centre these days.

    The same here!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • That's a shame it was the jacket deteriorating, but I guess in a way it is better than the buyer trying to scam you.

I've got the jacket back and I've done all inspection. It looks like it probably was my jacket after all. Those pictures she sent look really soooo different I could not believe it is the same, so I panicked a bit then. The jacket she sent back definitely does not look like it has been worn, and looking very closely at the label and other pics I have I decided it was most likely my jacket that got THAT badly damaged in transit. The resolution on the pics isn't too good after inserting them here, hence the details look very different on pics taken by different phones, particularly on her pics which were sent to me through eBay.

So I've just sent her a refund (she paid £18 plus postage). Also, I remember I had a faux leather handbag which was not used for a few years, and when I picked it up after a few years, it was shedding bits of leather all over, so I think the same thing happened to the jacket, particularly when it was rubbing against the box in transit.

Thanks everyone for all your support in this thread and sorry for sounding false alarm

Thank you for the update, it's always good to know the outcome.
