One of the other forums I occasionally use has a blind referral code generator.
If you are an ACME customer, you can submit your referral code to the forum where it is pooled with all the other ACME referral codes. If someone wants an ACME referal code, the forum software will supply them one from the pool.
This stops people spamming the forum with their codes but still allows forum members to help one another.
It's a shame that MSE doesn't operate something similar.

  • I wonder how much Youtubers make from Octopus referral codes.

This referral nonsense, I havent yet to find a single person to refer.

No family members or friends interested, a guy on another forum took my code and then told me a day later he used someone else's instead. :(  Wish it was easy.

    I would support this idea.
  • I don't understand why MSE doesn't allow codes that have mutual benefit.

They say they can't verify, which I understand if it just gives the new customer a benefit, but for mutually beneficial codes (like Octopus, where both parties get £50) why would someone give a fake code so both parties lose out, when they could give a real one and both benefit?

I do really like the idea of an anonymous generator.  Then it's fair.  MSE could even ask for screenshot proof of the link from our account if they're worried about someone randomly putting in a fake.

But what would be the advantage of a 'fake' code... it just wouldn't work and you'd use another one (if need be, email customer service and explain - they'll apply a different one to your account).

    I completely understand if I said 'here's a 50% discount code' and it was actually a 5% plus I got a kickback...

Well that's something I don't know either, but it's the reason given in the rules for not allowing them.

@Spoonie_Turtle one of the issues is that some of these referral schemes work in such a way that you can see the full name of the person who gave you the code and/or has used your code, so there are privacy implications which complicate matters in terms of sharing via the forum

I have three people lined up (Family and friends) for the New Year but only after spending lots of time explaining to them how in particular tracker works and the pitfuls as they are always interested in my average price per kWh since joining.

A couple a year is my target and already have three in from joining in July and as above three lines up for next year.

It all helps reduce the bills but it certainly is not effort free.
