No backup for Whatsapp - help!

Good thought but no, nothing. I read that the desktop version simple reads back and forth from the phone and, as soon as disconnected then everything that was stored in cache is deleted.

Might be worth everyone checking that their WhatsApp  back up IS really backing up !
Well ,based on my limited experience anyway

Whist I though/knew I had previously enabled WhatsApp back up a long time ago this thread prompted me to double check
On my phone the Last Back up date was 2 years ago ( to the day ?) - despite the backup being enabled as Daily and on a valid Google account ?
My wifes phone showed last back up as 6 months ago - same settings to a different valid google account !

Just forced both phones to do WhatsApp backups - will check again in a couple of days

Yep, you never know when you wish your backup does not work for the covid enquiry..... 😀

Well, I'm pleased that I have been able to help at least one person out. Thank you for posting this as a good reminder to everyone to check.

To update:
I contacted WhatApp help chat and they said that on Android 9 and older it was possible to retrieve old conversations but not on the later ones. I'm on Android 12.

As another thought, does anyone know if it's possible, person by person, to forward on a whole conversation back to the other member of the conversation? If it is then I could at least for the important ones, get them to send me everything back and I could slower re-fill my full chat History.

It's possible for them to export their chat with you to a text file, which they could send you. You wouldn't be able to "re-insert" it into your chat though.

To do this they have to click on your profile picture with the chat open, and scroll to the bottom to find "Export Chat".
