No backup for Whatsapp - help!

It appears that my Whatsapp has not been Backing up. I now need everything back.

Any ideas please?

I have all the contacts, just no messages stored.

I did a Factory Reset. Are Recovery tools ever successful with this?

I haven't used one on Android, but had decent success on Windows.

The principle being that files are never 'deleted' the memory is just flagged as OK to be overwritten with new data at some point.

Your success in recovery is usually gauged by how long (or specifically how much new data you have created that needs to be stored) since the wipe.

The database file for whatsapp will be very small so I'd be confident, though can't say the same about pictures/videos.

It should download everything when you log in to the app.. has this not happened?

There is an option in WhatsApp to back up to your Google drive.  When you reload WhatsApp it should spot this and offer to restore.

Of course this depends on whether you activated it in the first place, as it sounds like the backup was on the device itself, which defeats the whole point of a backup...

It's not as simple as all that. There is no Backed-up data file on Google. There is no data stored on the local drive because of the factory reset.
What I'm looking for is a Recovery tool that search for the 'hidden' files / the files that have been flagged for overwriting and recover these.
Anyone had any success with this?

This won't work on Android as storage is encrypted and factory resetting wipes the keys. (Unless you have a very old version)

Well silly me for 'assuming' that I was auto-backing everything up when it appears that I was not. Doh!

Good thought but no, nothing. I read that the desktop version simple reads back and forth from the phone and, as soon as disconnected then everything that was stored in cache is deleted.
