EE call bill almost £1000

Options
Hi all just after some advice, my daughter went on holiday to Turkey recently and turned off her roaming and made calls to her boyfriend back in the Uk resulting in a £970 mobile phone bill, EE have explained the Wi-Fi calling is just an aid to calling and not actually Wi-Fi calling. As she thought. Any arguments I can go back to EE with to reduce the cost?

Comments

  • Frankly, no.

Wi-fi calling is using the internet to route part of the call but still incurs call charges, which if they are overseas calls that are not part of any roaming tariff will not be cheap.

    What EE website says

How much does WiFi Calling cost?

Your existing call and text charges are the same when you use WiFi Calling. Calls and texts still come from any allowances or packs you may have. For usage beyond your allowances, charges will be at your standard rates

Of no use now but for future reference make sure that you set a cap on additional monthly charges over and above the standard monthly payment.

And use WhatsApp (or Google or Skype or Zoom etc) for actual free calls via the internet.

Alternatively taking the boyfriend on holiday with her would have been cheaper.

You should be able to set a limit to additional spend on the account, won't help for this bill but can prevent similar mistakes in the future.

There aren't arguments to have, she used her phone so has a bill to pay, you are instead looking for a gesture of goodwill. I was fortunate that when the Mrs didn't know how a certain app worked and thought she was calling using the app rather than the phone, that O2 agreed to half the bill (as well as block international calls and set a £10 a month additional spend limit)
