Cost of return under warranty

Hi All.

I bought two expensive suitcases from Amazon which have 10 year guarantees. They are now 5 years old.

Both have developed faults.

The UK after-sales people are saying the cost of return is down to us, but the combined cost of sending them back is £80-90 including the necessary insurance.

Does anyone happen to know whether I can insist that Amazon pays? Or is it down to me?

Many thanks

Given their age any rights are likely to be down to terms of your warranty so simple answer is what does the warranty say about return costs.

If the manufactuer offers the warranty, that's got nothing to do with Amazon.
Amazon cover your consumer rights, which you'll be hardpressed to get any kind of refund after 5 years.
What do the terms of the warranty say about return costs? That will be who pays.

Your consumer rights are with Amazon and you would likely need to prove that the fault existed at the time of purchase.  They would then repair, replace or refund.  Most likely refund but with a reduction for 5 years of use - how much is a 5 year old suitcase worth ? How much did these "expensive" suitcases cost ?
Using the manufacturer warranty you are bound by whatever the terms of that warranty may be which is most likely return at your cost.
  • Have you checked the costs or have you been told that by the manufacturer?  Sounds very high to me

I got the price from Parcel Monkey and Parcel2go. It's the insurance that really bumps it up.
  • How much cover do you need for the parcel OP?

What's the brand as there's expensive and 'expensive' ?

I've just had an issue with a Tumi case which is now over 20yrs old but had a lifetime warranty - they sent me a baggage label, collected the next day and returned it 3 working days later.

Some of the other premium brands (Rimowa) have similar agreements whereas Samsonite  are likely to want you to return to them or to one of their stores.

A warranty is on top of your statutory rights so can have any T&Cs that it wants. Some warranties are very good and some aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Remember that you are sending faulty 5 year old suitcases... are you sure you are declaring the value correctly for the insurance? They won't be worth what you paid for them 5 years ago and the insurance on parcels isn't "new for old" so it won't be what it'd cost to buy new suitcases now. Are you getting quotes to send them as one parcel or a consignment of two parcels? The former is likely to be cheaper.

Alternatively, if it's a brand with stores, is there an option to return via a store? They don't have to say yes but some do.

Check e.g. Parcelforce's own website. I've found insurance is much cheaper direct previously.

    Go direct to a courier...
Plenty of posts about these companies service (3rd party) & no payout. As it is not insurance, in the true sense.
