  • Unless Dimplex have changed the Quantums they do not use a balancing element to maintain the temperature - their boost setting is completely manual.
From watching YouTube videos, on how to use the new QDs (no demo by people installing) by the looks of it older style (6 year old YTVids) might have had the Boost as automatic but my QDs are newer and I am having to Boost by manual means.  So hopefully when/if they fix it the Boost should not kick in.

In the online instruction manual there used to be a setting that limited the amount of Boost usage.  Presumably the automatic Boost facility has been disabled because high daytime electricity prices generated many complaints?  It was a potentially useful but very risky feature.
  • That would make sense, at least if the peak boost element is manual, or at least time limited, then incorrect installation or meter faults will be obvious to the uninitiated user as the room will be cold, so they will call the installer back to investigate, rather than thinking everything is great until they get the bill...

The Elnur ecohhr has a time limit on the boost element, but the default of six hours is too high IMHO. It can however be reconfigured down to one hour*.

*As mentioned in a previous thread, you can set it to zero. But for some unknown reason Elnur decided that the off-peak charge control should change to dumb mode with no temperature compensation if you set zero here! It is documented in their manual.
  • A few more answers to peoples questions. The white box in the outside cupboard was the E7 feed to the main box and that was missing the isolator fuse, the man said the heaters and E7 water will now work. The missing label for the Large Lounge heater is due to it coming off a socket rather than its own input, makes sense as it has trunking to the switches that have plugs for tv, sky box etc.  I have been given some “user” tips in another thread on here, so hope it comes on in the morning and the trial & error can start. Thank you everyone for the useful information.

Not to add to your problems, but I'm not sure that a Quantum storage heater should be coming off a socket that is part of a regular spur or ring main.

The installation manual states The supply to the storage elements is not suitable for connection to a 30A ring circuit (24 hour peak supply).

Someone with better electrical knowledge than me will hopefully be able to comment with more authority on this.

I've no specific experience of DQ heaters, but I would expect the supply to the storage elements to be the E7 switched supply. The permanently live supply should only service the boost heater and the control logic.

If I'm right, that should be OK if they've set it up as a spur, not simply fitted a plug. Can you confirm?

I've looked at a more recent installation manual and I was wrong about how I thought the Quantum works.

You are correct QrizB. The permanent live does only service the boost heater and control logic. And as you say, it should be supplied from a switched fused spur. The Off peak supply should be a direct feed from the E7 fusebox.

I had wrongly assumed that the permanent live was the main high current supply to all the elements and that the Economy 7 wiring just acted as a low current trigger signal to tell the logic controller when to power up the main heater elements.

So to summarise, the OP needs to check that the permanent live connection is via a fused wall switch and not a plug.
  • First the good news, the heating and hot water is now working via the off peak supply, Hallelujah.
Very warm this morning, so need to work out the settings, not a bad problem to have.
The large lounge heater does have two separate switches, one is just linked, via trunking to the wall socket.
I hope that what I’ve been through means my neighbours get a smoother installation when the people do theirs.
