Insurance - ex Company car driver

I've been a company car driver for years so have zero no claims in my own name. I'm giving the company car back and will need to get my own insurance.  The company will give me a letter stating I've had no claims for 10 years, but this isn't the same as a no claims discount.
I've spoken to a broker and they will treat me as having zero no claims to start with, but if after one year if I still have no claims, they will treat me as having 11 years no claims.

In a years time could I then shop around and say I have 11 years no claims discount ?
Wasn't sure if other companies would say it was really only a year.

I've tried the comparison sites and the broker cost is very similar.

  • I think you need to start shopping around.  We have just come out of a campany car and they've given us the years NCB to put towards new insurance straight away.

Stateofart   I'm shopping around, but the devil is in the detail,  some companies won't accept NCB unless the policy was in your name rather than a company policy.  Hence asking on here.

Ultimately the insurance companies will happily take our money; it's only at the point of a claim will they check and look for any reason to refuse to pay out.

There's another recent thread on the same topic which may give you some useful information: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6481636/car-insurance-after-21-years-driving-a-company-car#latest
It's a case of shopping around - there are some insurers who will give you a certain amount of NCD based on your company car driving history.  It may not be the full 10 years or whatever that you've been claim-free, and it's definitely not all insurers who will do this, but some will so it's worth doing a bit of legwork.

In theory yes.  The "proof" of NCD usually comes in the form of the renewal invitation from your previous insurer - or, if you ask them, they will send you a letter confirming the NCD that you have earned with them.  So when the time comes to renew, as long as you've got something in black and white that you can forward to your new insurer, that would be accepted as proof of NCD.
On a side note, it tends to be quite unusual for most insurers to recognise more than 9 years NCD (although some will), and a lot only go up to 5 years.  But once you get above 5 years, the difference it makes to your premiums tends to be pretty small.

  • May well be in the link on a previous post, I've just been through this myself, and on the comparison sites they asked the question where the NCB was earned, with one of the options being 'on a company car'.  The letter from my employer was accepted as proof with no issues (insurer was Aviva).
