EV road tax

Is it true that the  Government has decided to BACKDATE vehicle tax rules so from April 2025, all EVs registered since April 2017 will be taxed at £165 per annum ?

    What do you mean by ‘backdate’?
    AFAIK 2025 is in the future.

    Yes and backdate means from the past - ie) April 2017 !!
    As in "The new electric car tax rate will apply to cars first registered on 1 April 2017, which means it will be backdated to include millions of used EVs in the UK."
    And  to make matters even worse "If you purchase an electric vehicle with a list price of £40,000 or more (Which many/most are) - you will qualify to pay a premium level of car tax."
    ie) an additional £390 pa  for five years..
    Which somewhat negates some of the advantage of purchasing an EV.
    That makes my low emission Suzuki look quite desirable at £30 pa

    According to the RAC, cars registered after April 2017 will be charged at the standard rate of £180.  No mention of backdating the Expensive Car Supplement.  But, do bear in mind the removal of the Expensive Car Supplement for electric cars was also back dated and refunds were paid out.

    Welcome to the world of politically derived car taxation.  Same system means my i3 REX pays more tax/fund (whatever) to drive on the road than my neighbour's 2016 diesel Focus used to cost her.

    No reason EV should ever have been exempt other to try and make people buy something that they didnt really need.

    VED was always going to be introduced for them ,it was just a matter of when.

    IMO the same will happen with taxation on electricity- revenues from VED and fuel have to be replaced somehow


  • How dare they, Who would have though the govenment would screw over the common man AGAIN.
    Im outraged, my car tax has jumped from £30 to £35 this year.
    Its a disgrace.

    yes - but the non-expensive car supplement is being backdated

    "Backdated" is probably not the correct term, but I don't know what term would be appropriate instead.

    AIUI, EVs will be liable to VED from 2025 including those EVs registered when the rate was NIL.
    That is a different way to how the NIL rated ICEs were treated when the NIL band was ended, vehicles originally in the NIL band remained as such.
    I don't know whether the NIL band ICEs will also be subject to VED from 2025.

    It would be illogical for a previously (currently) NIL rated EV to become liable for the VED but leave previously (currently) NIL rated ICE as still NIL rated.
