RCS and SMS

Hello, I have had a few texts that have not sent,when I realise this, there is an option to send as SMS instead. Having googled the matter I found a setting in messages which said automatically resend as a text SMS, switch from RCS chats if a message can't be sent, which I turned on.
I tried to revisit this settings page but when I click on RCS chats I now get RCS chats aren't available for this device, your device doesn't support this feature
If I uninstall updatesfrom messages app the page reappears and RCS chats are connected.
Am I missing something, cheers
