Warm Home Discount

Options
I have been entitled to, and received, the Warm Home Discount for several years.

However I changed my electricity provider in June, this year. After contacting them about the discount, they informed me that they don't do it.

I have contacted Age Concern who confirmed that I will not get the discount this year because my energy provider is not part of the scheme and it seems that there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

How is this fair? The Warm Home Discount is my entitlement from the government. Surely there should be another way to receive the entitlement if your supplier is not part of the scheme?

I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this.

Who is your energy provider? Yes before switching it is always worth checking if supplier is in the scheme... the bigger suppliers should all be. https://www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme/energy-suppliers

There's not really much you can do other than change supplier or write to your MP to suggest changing the criteria for those companies who must be part of the WHD scheme.

  • "The Warm Home Discount is my entitlement from the government"...... no it isn't. It is from the supplier, which is paid for by it's customers

    Hi,
are you maybe thinking about the Winter Fuel Payment from the Government?
  • We don’t get it this year either. our rented property is exactly the same as then, but  is no longer deemed ‘difficult to heat’ according to the new rules. It’s a deliberate policy to reduce the number of people who can qualify for help so that millionaires can get their desperately needed tax cuts in time for the election. The warm home discount has always depended on your suppliers though and I don’t think that’s changed.

No actually, the rationale was to increase the number of people eligible by removing the intrinsic vulnerability requirement and doing it just on fuel poverty instead.  This year they've lowered the threshold for what counts as a property being high cost.

This is correct, yes.  There's a threshold for the number of customers a supplier needs to have before they have to participate in the WHD scheme.
When the Cheap Energy Club was functioning to compare tariffs, it always showed whether the supplier participated or not.  Many of the smaller ones didn't.

I was exactly the same last year and missed out after claiming it for many years. This year because they changed the crtieria threshold i now qualify and received a letter last week. I'm not saying you will definitely qualify but you may.

As the Op ‘s supplier is not part of the scheme he won’t get it.
The Winter Fuel Payment is based on your age. It is nothing to do with whether you rent or own your house, or whether it is considered difficult to heat.

You are eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment if you were born  before 25th September 1957.

You're thinking of the wrong thing.

Warm Home Discount is based on eligibility and being with a participating supplier, and is paid/credited through the supplier.  That's what this thread is about.

Winter Fuel Payment is based solely on age and paid straight into bank accounts, nothing to do with energy suppliers.

Yes i know the OP won't be entitled. I was replying to Paulbnm's comment, which is a different member.

I wasn't talking about the WFP. I'm not anywhere near State Pension age so i'm not entitled to that anyway. I was talking about the WHD.
