    What is the car ?
I cannot say at present. The dealer is working very hard to try and fix the problem and I don't want to tarnish their reputation. It's not really anyones fault. It's like 99% of people buy an XYZ. They bring out an ultra-compact XY and I'm the first one to buy one in the UK.

The ONLY solution is to get this listed on the insurers database.
Hence my question, how do we do it?
How does telling us what the exact car is effect a dealers reputation if we don’t know who the dealer is?
It might be that there is only one dealership in the uk
True, but even then this is not really the dealers fault the OP failed to check this out.

What the OP is looking for is not going to happen, and as this seems to be a custom order they are not going to be able to simply walk away without some financial loss.

There are specialised brokers out there deal with non-standard car insurance such as the examples in the following links.

I also had this with a new car for my Mum about 6 years ago.

It was in effect a Citroen DS3, which previously had been Make: Citroen  Model: DS3.  There had been a branding change and this was listed as Make: DS Model: 3 a combination which didn’t show up for insurance purposes.

We picked the closest match from the Citroen options and went with it.

Given the specialist nature of the vehicle and the fact that the manufacturer has an insurance recommendation (albeit at a cost) then without more details there's not much to add

If it's the first of a new model then it's down to time whereas if it's exclusive/limited run e.g. Electric Ariel Atom then you're in the realms of specialist insurers as mentioned above

Still not sure why secrecy of the car/dealer is as issue - especially as you're unlikely to have any rights to cancel the deal

Best answer yet. Similar to what has happened here. It's not a specialist vehicle, just not on the system. Hence my original question, "how to get it on the system"  (rather than a replay)
However, accepting the nearest model means it's not insured. (confirmed by underwriter)

Thatcham maintains the list of vehicles on behalf of the ABI so if you feel you need to talk databases then they'd be the ones to contact to see if they are listing your variant yet

This isn't a Mercedes is it?

They do tend to have problems with this and the Merc forms are full of owners sweating over this problem.

I had a similar issue registering a new Spanish made trials bike years ago.
It's the chicken and the egg problem.

It doesn't appear on the insurance list as it's not on the DVLA database and it's not on the DVLA database as no one has registered one yet.

You might have to shop around for some short term specialist insurance to cover you to get it registered first, then once they have it on DVLA's database it will appear on the list the insurance companies use.
Either that or wait until someone else does.

This is usually not a problem for most as it's often the manufacturer, importer or dealers that first registers new models with DVLA, like press cars or demos etc.

I seem to think some don't though and leave the very first owner to sort it out for all the future owners!

If it's a new model variant that's not on the system, then it really should be up to the manufacturer to get it onto the system.

How different is it? Is it just a different trim level or a completely different model designator?

How is the dealing registering it in the system when you're given the registration plate number?

You won't get a reg number until it's registered with DVLA.
Yes you might be able to choose one for a pre assigned dealer list but it won't be connected to the car until it's registered with DVLA.

To do this the dealer will fill out a V55.
There's a host of details to fill in, tax class, type approval, emissions and on and on and on, but the reg number is left blank unless they have one from a pre assigned list they want to use (or a personal plate on retention)

One area is make, model and trim to fill in.
Believe it or not to can actually put anything in the model and trim. I once made a rather embarrassing spelling mistake when entering the model of a vehicle.

This is then sent or taken to DVLA office with the first years tax and a registration fee (£55 or so).
In a few weeks the V5C is sent out to whoever's name and address is on the V55.
It has to be insured to tax it, so it needs a cover note or be on MID.

You can insure it on chassis number for a short time if you have no reg number to select from a pre assigned dealer list.
This is why dealers get lists of reg numbers to use, it (usually) makes the process of insuring the vehicle to be registered easier.
The new owner uses that number to get the insurance, all being good (which isn't in this case).

I suspect dealers can use an online system but the same form (just electronic), details and fees are required.

Once on the DVLA system, that make, model and trim is then searchable by the insurance companies.
They will continually update their databases.

Brilliant, you got it 100% right. I tried several specialist brokers but they eventually go back to the underwriter that has already turned me down. They pick the nearest equivalent to get it on the system but ultimately it's up to me to check the documentation is correct (and it's not correct). That's why I'm trying to get the dealer to correct it but they are struggling so I have no chance. I'm hoping that if they get it on the system, I will be able to go anywhere for insurance. Hence my question, is it just one database and that's the DVLA? Really appreciate your help and understanding!
