Income Tax & Exam Invigilation??

On the gov.uk website, I've just checked if I need to send in a Self Assessment tax return, and it appears I do only because I occasionally work as an exam invigilator. That seems bizarre to my mind. I attempted to read the explanation on the gov.uk website but I'm afraid it was impregnable for me.

Can anyone kindly explain, in layman's terms, why an exam invigilator specifically should complete a tax return? By the way, the only other occupations that are also required to send in a tax return, irrespective of their financial position, are: Lloyd's underwriter, share fisherman, exam moderator/examiner and religious minister. Have I misunderstood something?

Are you self employed as an examiner?

Do you earn over £1000 in a year?

  • Yes, everyone who has a self employed income has to do a tax return (over 1k/yr). i.e. if you're doing paid work that's not paid through Pay As You Earn payroll system (where your employer works out your income tax and NI deductions for you).

Thanks for your responses, I think you've answered my question. It seems this rule applies to self employed examiners/exam moderators/exam invigilators and I'm employed so this doesn't apply to my situation.

FYI - here's a link to the gov.uk webpage I found. There's an eight question 'survey' that is supposed to tell you whether you need to send in a Self Assessment tax form. The final question concerns occupation. Maybe I missed some wording about being self employed?

For reasons other than occupation, I need to submit a S.A. tax return  - and have done so for many years - that final 'survey' question just seemed strange to me and I wondered the reason for it.

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

    1. Did you work for yourself between 6 April 2022 and 5 April 2023?

Your answer should have been No.

Your answer should have been No.

I did answer No to Q1. I also repeated the survey by answering the final question with a No and that resulted in me not being required to send in a S.A.

I would encourage anyone interested to try out this survey by answering the first 7 questions with answers that you know won't require you to send in a S.A. then answer the eighth question as if you're an exam invigilator. I imagine you'll get the same result as me.
