If you are not on there pro broadband or
any digital voice plans you can use any approved Openreach router
    I haven't had a good experience using routers from other ISP's ...
When I was ADSL, I used a Draytek Vigor 7110. Very configurable (intended for small businesses) and pretty cheap second-hand.
Since switching to VDSL / FTTC my old Draytek doesn't work and I need to get a later model.

I usually just wait until broadband stops and then swap the router, but two days later and it was still working with the old router.
I did the same switch and had the same experience! I did swap the Vodafone router for the Shell one, but I'm wondering about swapping it back again.
Strangely this happened once before, the previous time I switched to Shell. That time I didn't bother swapping the router until Shell got in touch to say they couldn't see my router on their management console and was everything OK?

I used a retail adsl router years ago, but the first time I raised a support call they insisted that I use a router that they supplied. It didn't change anything because it was an issue with adsl 2 max settings at the exchange, the minimum line rate was higher than the line could support so it just hunted continuously.
