What colour is the outer sheath on the cable in that extension ? Is there any chance it is the other end of that brown cable coming out of the brown wallbox.  You have the BT incoming pair going into the hole in the wall, a bunch of telecom cable coming out of the hole - connected to nothing, the brown cable going into the box - again connected to nothing - and a bit of TV aerial co-ax.

    Know any older pensioners?
Ask if they have a spare phone to borrow. A surprising number of people do still stored somewhere.

The incoming pair of wires need to end up connected to 2 and 5 on your extension socket or move the main socket upstairs where your extension socket was and terminate the wires that were on 2 and 5 on to the main socket

@Section62 I was answering this question

Without a telephone, how can I tell that the socket is connected or working?

Not advocating an illegal socket move.
I Don't think it's illegal  to move a master socket.Openreach will charge if you get the wiring wrong.

We currently have our broadband router connected to the master socket downstairs but we'd like to move the router to upstairs in the study where an extension telephone socket is.

I hoped it would be a trivial task of relocating the router, plug in and away but unfortunately, no internet connection.

Without a telephone, how can I tell that the socket is connected or working?

    Photos below:

    Do these wiring look right?

This is the entry to the master socket.

Is it worth asking BT/Openreach (or an engineer?) to relocate the master socket?
When you get full fibre installed you will lose the use of the extension if you are able to get digital voice you plug the phone into the router.
In my case the master socket was never in a suitable position as it lacked a power supply and I   managed to have it installed where the router was located at no cost

That external brown box appears to have 2 brown sheathed cables coming in from underground and going nowhere. The thick brown cable looks like co-ax and is possibly a redundant Virgin Media connection. Whose logo is on the lid of the brown box? - and who is your broadband supplier?
Does the black cable come down from an overhead feed?
I'm assuming that the orange and white wires from the black cable go through the wall to your master socket NTE5C.
Can you take off the lower front part of the NTE and take a picture. You probably won't see the orange and white incoming wires; they'll be connected to the back of the backplate, which you're not allowed to access. You should see the other end of the 3-pair cable to your extension and check that the blue pair is properly connected.

I dont think the brown outside box relates to the Internal white socket at all and believe the posts suggesting it is likely a redundant viging/NTL/cable and wireless connection are likely correct. .

  • My apologies - we had the kids over so didn't get a chance to use my computer!

Below are photos of the master socket:

From my observation, I think the only cable going inside is the black one connected to the master socket. Also it seems that only 2 blue wires are connected - is this correct? Note: we purchased the house only 2 months ago

    Questions to answer:

FFHillbilly if you aren't getting a connection at the slave point in the upstairs study it would imply a fault between maser socket and there.

Sounds like it but how would I determine the actual fault? Not enough wires connected? I see blue/white to 5, blue to 2, orange to 3 while the master socket only has 2 blues connected.

Vortigern Whose logo is on the lid of the brown box? - and who is your broadband supplier? Does the black cable come down from an overhead feed?

Not sure, it is a very old brown box (we purchased the house 2 months ago) and we cannot see any logos. Our broadband supplier is Vodafone. And yes the black cable is coming down from an overhead line.

    -------

Do extension sockets normally have an extra/separate cable coming in from the master socket? I cannot tell where the black cable for the extension socket is coming from (not visible from outside or inside). For all I know, the socket might just be dead!

When you get full fibre installed you will lose the use of the extension if you are able to get digital voice you plug the phone into the router.

No idea when/if full fibre is coming - Openreach's website simply said "Not yet available"

Provided that the wiring in both master and extension sockets are correct, I guess my next step is to source an old telephone to see if the line even works. If it doesn't, then I may have to drill some holes in the sideboards to hide the router devices!

  • Hi,
does a neighbour have a plug in phone you could borrow for 5 minutes, then you would know if extension live, if so check it in master socket first, the coloured wire talk is getting nowhere.

Yes, this is correct, but makes no sense to me. White and red go inside from outside (no sleeve), then two blues with a sleeve are connected to the socket. There seems to be some intermediate connection inside the hole in the wall.

Yes, the extension socket has to be connected to the master one (unless some idiot made another connection hidden in the hole). This explains why the extension socket is dead. To revive it you have to trace the cable it is connected to.
