Key battery

I am with Nissan on personal contract hire. Had the car about 2.5 years and I pay monthly (includes yearly servce cost). My car key is saying battery is low.

Nissan are telling me I have to pay for replacement although I asked them if it would not be covered by warranty.

I can't imagine a warranty would ever cover a battery in the key/keyfob. What's the fault? A warranty covers things that break or perform not as expected. A service cost covers oil & filter changes and a few more bits as per schedule. Things that wear out through normal use/wear & tear are generally not covered. Without seeing your policy details/cover terms etc. we can't really know - but definitely highly unlikely.

No its a wear item and you are arguing over something that is about £2 each and you can do it yourself. Best to do one key, prove it is working and then do the other one.

Example video on how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOkh9fcGJC8

You may just need to search for your particular fob to get the right instructions.

If you don't fancy changing the battery go into one of those shoe repair places that are everywhere - Timpsons?  Think they charged £25 last time they did this for me.  The dealership wanted £300+

You can buy decent (duracell, panasonic, varta) button CR2032 battery for about £1 each though might be a pack of 2 or 4. Easy enough to change, done it loads of time on our keys, on BMW key last week.

A replacement battery shouldn't cost a lot, you can get them online pretty easily.

Yeah nearly all this.  Easy to crack open and change.  Costs about a quid.

I'm with the others on this - it'll cost about a quid for a battery and take you about 2 or 3 minutes to change it yourself.  I've changed dozens of them over the years in various cars I've had.  Odds on the owner's manual will even have instructions for doing it, and tell you what type of battery you need.
Usually it's just a case of sticking in a new battery.  Occasionally you may need to reset it.  Again, the owner's manual will tell you how to do this if it's necessary, but it's usually something dead simple like stick the key in the ignition, turn it to the first click then press the key button, something along those lines.

You’ve been robbed. Pack of 8 for £1 at our local pound shop.
