i know exactly where these are as i live in the area, apart from the camera there is a sensor on the road which triggers the camera.
my brother in law thought he had triggered the cameras around 3 weeks ago but hasn't heard anything so it looks like he isn't going to get a fine. they look at all the pictures and decide if it is grounds to fine you could be lucky. just for information you could get 3 points as well, don't know if they will give the option of a safety course in this situation.
It was dark, wet and there was a car close on her tail, so I think she hesitated about braking quickly (thinking that could be more dangerous) and went through instead. I doubt they'd take that into consideration though!
The 3 points are also a concern, because she only passed her test 5 months ago. That would put her on 3 points, meaning one more mistake could cost her her licence.
The light would have been at amber so she should hve been preparing to stop by slowing down.
175 You MUST stop behind the white ‘Stop’ line across your side of the road unless the light is green. If the amber light appears you may go on only if you have already crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to stop might cause a collision. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 36
If she was caught she may be offered a What’s Driving Us? Course instead of the 3 points.
I didn't think these were offered to new drivers, but if they are, that would be a better outcome. Fingers crossed!
AIUI The only criteria are (1) that you haven't done one in the previous three years (based on offence dates), and (2) the 'time into red' is less than x seconds. As the lights had only just changed, she should qualify.
