Red light camera or traffic sensor?

My wife accidentally drove through a red light yesterday. It felt like the light was red for about a second before going through, but it was probably less than that.

The junction had these installed about a month ago. Does anyone know if this is a red light camera or a traffic sensor? There wasn't a flash, but I know some cameras use infra-red. Really hoping we don't end up with a £100 fine!

  • I have no expertise in these but they appear to be facing the wrong way to be red light cameras - the angle of the lower one particularly.  Maybe they are ANPR looking at the front of approaching vehicles?
  • They look like traffic flow sensors to me.

I thought the same thing, that were looking the wrong way. So I thought they were traffic flow sensors. But photoenforced.com, which shows red light camera locations, lists that junction as a red light camera. So now I'm stressing that we'll have a fine heading our way.
  • i know exactly where these are as i live in the area, apart from the camera there is a sensor on the road which triggers the camera.

my brother in law thought he had triggered the cameras around 3 weeks ago but hasn't heard anything so it looks like he isn't going to get a fine.
they look at all the pictures and decide if it is grounds to fine you could be lucky.
just for information you could get 3 points as well, don't know if they will give the option of a safety course in this situation.

It was dark, wet and there was a car close on her tail, so I think she hesitated about braking quickly (thinking that could be more dangerous) and went through instead. I doubt they'd take that into consideration though!

The 3 points are also a concern, because she only passed her test 5 months ago. That would put her on 3 points, meaning one more mistake could cost her her licence.

The lights would have been on amber for 3 seconds, so no excuse there.

But it's not a red light camera: it's in the wrong place. They have to be positioned several meters before the line, so as to capture both the vehicle crossing the stop line and the lights

I pass the crossroads every day, so I will check again on my way to see if there is another camera before the lights.
  • I have found an image from May 2023 on Google Streetview. There is definitely a camera about 15 metres before the lights, looking towards the crossroads. Just need to hope that she actually made it through in time, before the light had changed.

I'd just get on with life, and not worry about it. It's not as though you can do anything about it, other than cough up if needed.

If she was caught she may be offered a What’s Driving Us? Course instead of the 3 points.
