Storms and bad weather are always over egg'd these days.

    Bring back Michael Fish

A few hours before the Great Storm of 1987 broke, on 15 October 1987, he said during the weather: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!".
No they re not .Up in North East Scotland in the middle of winter a couple of years ago my friend in Aberdeenshire had a terrible time in very cold weather with no heating for two weeks due to power cuts .His son  and family nearby ended up getting transferred to a hotel 20 miles away on the coast. Windspeed forecast up there is a similar speed to the one which downed all the trees.
In my area we get bigger floods than ever in the recorded history of our local river levels which caused huge areas of flooded villages  .The weather is getting more extreme events as predicted in climate change theory .

How many people will search out flood plains and future predictions when buying?

Whenever I see Meadow in a developments branding I always think flood plain, do not see as much nowadays.
Lol yeah that used to be a dead giveaway.

And I can remember 4 people I know power cut off in floods for 4 weeks and had to move out for a year but it is generally over egg'd to the extreme as the news only knows one way to report with shock and awe these days. Two days of hunkering down, don't do anything stupid like drive and it'll all be over.

That said the friends I know that live in a flood plain can afford to move but don't so have limited sympathy for them.

Just as an aside we picked our latest home well away from any rivers and a decent height above sea level and not coastal. I wonder if others think of such things on their house search list or just get set on an area come what may?

I was involved in a small way in the big Yorkshire flood of 2019 and even found a drowned person whilst watching the local river levels. There were hundreds of houses completely flooded out in a few local  villages and made the headlines with visits from Prince Philip , and the political leaders .  Fishlake and Bentley a few miles from  my house got the worst of the floods direct from the river levels breaking all previous records.

More people got flooded out overall in my area in that big flood just in  normal residential streets not on floodplains or former floodplains or the villages which made the headines .These can be anywhere where the  road dips a little .The drains get overwhelmed quickly in autumn and winter probably through leaves etc .  . They are recorded on local street maps where street flooding like this has occurred. The night before  Fishlake got flooded I was out at midnight helping to save a neighbour from his house getting innundated with a pump..It failed and they got a foot of water into the main rooms . He was just in a bit of dip 100 yards from me
. Its certainly not just flood plains or near rivers where houses get flooded out ,It could be anywhere not near a river or any watercourse as the flooding out pours in from the sky  above .

If you reads the news then yes but assess for your location on this shrinking Island.

We are 300ft above sea level and no river or sea for miles.

As an aside we have a 1kw power station for electricity, a diesel Chinese 8kw heater, multi fuel burner and a petrol 2200w generator.

What makes me laugh is those that do live in risk areas that don't have any backups for power/water/food/heat and light and expect everything to be fixed immediately and help to arrive even sooner.

I must confess that my wife and I are rather similar to yourself. Pretty much ‘Back up Everything’.

Crime, Flood and pollution maps are always part of my lookups, when I find somewhere that's interesting.
The amount of new build estates being built smack bang in marshland or flood level 3 high-risk areas is astonishing. Especially when they cram in more houses than usual, too.

The push from central and local authority is for households to make their own provisions, and to plan for up to three days either cut off, or without power, or both.

While I completely agree that assessing things like flooding risk is important when considering a property... the current forecasts suggest sea levels rise by around a foot over the next 30 years - so I'd suggest no need to put yourself on top of a mountain in the wilderness either ;)
