Morning all,  we have been renovating our old barn and having the ASHP fitted at the moment.
I have had conflicting reports on whether we are able to make use of the ASHP grant from the government.

It is a self build  but it has had no other form of heating before and we will be the first occupiers since renovation

I had a grant for my installation in the summer.

The grant was approved before work started, it had to have been carried out by an MCS registered installer and it had to replace my gas heating.

    I am in England.

    It's a boiler upgrade scheme.

    https://www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme

    Overview

Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could get a grant to cover part of the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems with a heat pump or biomass boiler.

Fossil fuel heating systems include oil, gas or electric.

After you’ve checked you’re eligible, find out how to apply for the grant.

This scheme is open to people in England and Wales.

If you live in Scotland, you might be able to get an interest-free loan or a grant to make your home more energy efficient.

If you live in Northern Ireland, you might be able to get a grant to replace your boiler.

If you are in England or Wales then I think you won't qualify as you are not replacing a fossil fuel heating system.

It doesn't seem that hard to find out https://www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme/check-if-youre-eligible .  Although perhaps the issue is with the fact that it's a "renovation"?

If you own a new build property
New build properties which the developer is still building are not eligible.
If you move into a finished new build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may be able to get a grant for a heat pump under the scheme.

If you own a self build property
Your self build property is eligible if:
    • you or the original owner built it yourself or you paid a builder to build it
    • it’s never been owned by a business or organisation
You’ll need to show your installer proof that your property is a self build, for example, a copy of the title deeds.

The grant covers replacing an existing boiler so I don’t think it’s available for something like a barn conversion. Even if if was available I think you need to apply before installation rather than retrospectively.

    That's what I saw so I presume I can ..

You are not building a property, you are converting a barn.

Presumably the barn belonged to a farm at some point?

If so, the property has been owned by a business.

It's hard to see how you would qualify based on the information available.

But you could just apply and see how you get on?

    They can only say no.

No it was never run as a business  or as a farm .

It was my FIL's storage barn .. as he has 12 acres of land and he kept his mowers in there
  • OK, well you obviously know much more about the history than any of us.

You have the rules of the available grants so it must be easy for you to work out if you qualify.

Why hasn't your installer already applied for the grant?

Well it is now clear, we are not allowed the grant which is what we probably expected ,

However , the ASHP has now been commissioned and apart from the plant room looking like star ship enterprise  I am told I don't have to touch anything apart from raising the concrete floor temp 1 degree everyday until it hits 45.

This is to make sure the flooring is less likely to hairline cracks

My ASHP has a concrete drying mode; I don't know if this is a standard feature.

I guess your problem was that although your title says "self-build" it was actually a renovation.  You win on the planning permission and lose on the ASHP grant.
