Has Royal Mail cut back on deliveries??

  • When I was a Manager at Royal mail Offices had to be clear every day so postmen had additional overtime  however if you could not get anyone to do it  I have known managers having to deliver mail. Today if a postman calls in sick his delivery is left for the next day so no overtime is incurred
  • Here, ours is left until that person returns to work, not just the next day.
We regularly get a delivery once a week and it'll be 1 big load of it.
Now when i buy anything, if there's a choice of courier companies, RM aren't at the top of my list.

I can appreciate that the problem is self-perpetuating: I rarely send anything by post, so I rarely receive anything by post, so I only see a postie once or twice a week (generally an NHS letter!)  But they don't do themselves any favours ...

On Saturday 7 October, a very reputable retailer dispatched a parcel using RM Tracked 48. It should have arrived Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. It sat - during an issue with RM's tracking service - at their Midlands distribution hub. On Friday they claimed that the recipient had "reused to accept"; not true, they had been nowhere near our house on that day/time. On Saturday, it was "successfully delivered"; yes, delivered back to the warehouse that had originally sent it. During the entire week RM couldn't tell me with any certainty where the parcel was, apart from gleefully saying that it has now been delivered so was I now happy? Durrr. The very reputable retailer then used DPD to resend the parcel, it arrived within 24 hours and I even got advised of the delivery time.

The strange thing will all of this though is the push to home collection for items. If you buy labels via the RM site - not ebay, you can even get standard large letters collected in my area. I tried it last week once I noticed the RM site offering it and they sent a van to me at about 1pm to collect 2 under 100g LLs. The same day we had a van turn up at 7.15m with a package for my OH - the postie was really cheerful, said he has a shift that starts at 12pm and as soon as he's finished dropping off parcels (no letters) he can go home and most of the time he was finished by 6 or 7 . So with a letter that morning we actually saw 3 different posties in one day.

Admittedly we don't seem to get letter post every day anymore, but recently it has improved- we went from about 3 letter posts a week about a year ago to one nearly every day now (we see the postie on his rounds even if he doesn't have anything for us)

  • We seem to get deliveries (of letters) every other day, but occasionally we get stuff really late, like Radio Times (normally Tuesdays) arriving on the Monday of the week it's for. This is in East Dorset.

In Midlands we receive letters via RM only twice a week nowadays. Ordered a new Talk Mobile SIM card last week on Wednesday morning. According to Talk Mobile it was sent first class. My OH says it arrived today at about 11am. I was actually hoping to have it by Sunday :( The same with bank cards.
