Mis-sold kitchen or appliance? Help!

Yes, the fridge/oven below counter units have more depth. Whereas the wall units/cupboards are shallow and the microwave recess is wall mounted. On return I made it clear that I wasn't informed about the two different sizes of microwave here, however they obviously denied as to be expected and made a big deal about how lucky I am to be offered a not so useful credit note with a 3 month expiry.Unless you were able to demonstrate the trader mislead you, either through action or omission, there wouldn’t be any avenue for returning an in store purchase that conforms to the contract. Are kitchen units and integrated appliances standard depths or do they generally vary?
As per above really, the supposed 'goodwill' was in the form of a quick expiry credit note.Aylesbury_Duck said:I can't see that you have any rights under consumer law because I can't see where the retailer has been unreasonable, unless they haven't acted in accordance with their own returns policy? Have you checked that policy thoroughly to see if they are correct?
A chargeback or section 75 claim will surely fail because you've received the item and no consumer law or contract has been breached. Even if your bank issued a chargeback, the retailer would have the right - and the grounds - to challenge and reverse it.
Goodwill is your best bet. Have you tried that approach?

Also to note on their website (circa Geocities 1997) there's no stated returns policy.

In what way did you expect them to proactively inform you about product sizes? That doesn't seem a particularly realistic expectation, and, as above, in the absence of any returns policy, you are lucky to be offered anything at all, as they're not obliged to do so....FlaatusGoat said:

This sounds as if there's 2 different sizes, rather than say 20?FlaatusGoat said:

If there are two standards probably not much to be done, if there are 20 you could argue the lack of sizes is an omission but I guess if buying in person not measuring might count against you
Any value in reselling on Facebook or similar to make the loss a bit less painful? In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
There are two categories of built-in microwaves, standard and compact, but within each category there seem to be as many front-to-back sizes as there are ovens.

Standard are 600mm wide with a depth of 450 - 600mm, for mounting in tall housing units.
Compact are 500mm wide with a depth of 290 - 390mm, for wall cupboard mounting.
So only one of the very smallest models would fit the OP's recess.
AO have a useful Microwave Measurement Guide on their website

Too late now unfortunately but with hindsight perhaps @FlaatusGoat should have gone to AO.
They say:
If you’re designing your dream kitchen from scratch, you’ll be able to find the dimensions of our built-in appliances on our product pages under the Key Information tab. Our handy guide takes the guesswork out of measuring up for your new microwave. We’ll run you through what to measure and how to do it. Even if your new appliance arrives and it doesn’t fit, we will return it for you free of charge. No worries!

I have never tried to purchased an appliance and had the the supplier come back to me and say are you sure this is the size you need?Any appliance going into a wall unit is going to need to be slimmer in depth than one going into under counter or tall floor unit. My old woodwork teacher used to say measure twice and cut once, something the OP should should do in future.0

Can you please clarify why the retailer could not simply fit a 13 amp plug to the appliance and sell it as a refurbished item if they felt so minded ?born_again said:

After chopping plug of, retailer can not resell microwave, they would have to scrap it.

My understanding is that the retailer would have to pay for a suitable qualified electrician to fit it, I'm not sure of the exact legislation but I remember B&Q used to see ex display tools which stopped when I was working for them due to this. It did mean the staff got very cheap tools out of the skip 👍Jumblebumble said:

I wonder if the opp could just remove the back of the cupboard as there is often a decent gap behind them.0

They come with moulded plugs. So simply fitting a normal plug would leave them wide open should anything go wrong.Jumblebumble said:
