Why would any experienced bricklayer do that? Surely they've set themselves up for a social media slanging? It looks like Master Brickie on one side and Day One Apprentice on the other.

OP, if you know the co. perhaps you could contact and ask why such a shoddy job on your side.

Edited:  apologies, didn't see there was a Page 2.  So Master Brickie has properly finished on one side but not the other.  But if it's single brick, I don't understand how the OPs side can look like it does?
I did wonder that as well since OPs side has a lot of half bricks which aren’t obvious on the good side, unless they’re in another section that’s not been photographed.
No consolation to OP, but the good side does look good
I would say that is the back side of the pier. Every other course has 2 brick ends going right though.

From the top it doesn’t look too bad and it’s only the first four brick layers that are terrible.  Above that it’s doesn’t look bad and is a reasonable job.

    The whole thing is crazy!
Me I'd tell the neighbour with a sweet smile on my face did he realise the finish on my side would decay the wall quickly and then sit back and wait for the wind and rain.
I'd be inclined to put something in front of it like bamboo to improve my view and then sue for the cost when the wall came down.

Completely crazy. How could anyone think that was sturdy?
The neighbour doesn't have joined up thinking.
Is there a foundation for this wall?

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on

The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

  • As others have said, I would probably be more concerned that wall is going to fall down at some point and kill whoever finds themselves by it at the time...

I agree - the look isn't the important thing here, the safety is!  Which of course affects both properties, not just you.

Had the whole of their cash in his care.

How  deep are the foundations, and what's the subsoil in your area?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Which way do the prevailing winds blow? Whose garden did the old fence get blown into? Maybe the wall is at risk of going the same way...

  • My daughter bought a house about 10 years ago. The neighbour had a similar boundary wall, although the brickwork was finished far better. When we put our hand on the top of the wall and pulled lightly the wall flexed so I was concerned about safety in strong winds. It didn't fall down before she sold it, although I expected it to.

The big problem with walls in my part of Essex is the clay soil. Garden walls tend to have quite a small footing compared to a dwelling and it's often the footing that moves and cracks the walls. We see it everywhere here.
