My smart gas meter is happily communicating with my supplier. But I have an old spinning disc electricity meter. The gas meter installer wired the comms hub straight into the mains, rather than plugging it into the top of an electricity meter.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -

It is also logical not to install old technology when modern options are better and cheaper.I am unsure what to do, I really would prefer not to get one, but we have used gas during that time & i’m worried about incurring a large bill.Accept the smart meter. There really doesn't appear to be any justifiable reason for you to reject one. Also, I've discovered that my SMETS2 meter is not working as designed. I don't care so much about the IHD which has never worked but it is a concern when the clock has been 7 hours out of sync for the past year. A fault like that can be costly on an E7 tariff. Both of my previous conventional meters went out of sync on the timer. Smart meters should, in theory, be retaining time as they check in via the network whereas conventional ones didn't. You should get that fixed if its happening on a SMETS2.They certainly do still make dumb gas meters and they are a lot cheaper to produce than the smart ones.I accept though that the suppliers are no longer buying dumb meters and I also accept that the smart meter programme has cost us all a lot of money.1 -

£19bn return for £13bn outlay sounds like a pretty decent return. Doesn’t sound like “I don’t like the govt wasting our money on smart meters” is a reason to turn one down…1 -

A short stay of execution. Smart meters are now mandatory in Italy (since 2006); in France (dissenters pay an annual fine that increases each year) and in Germany from 2025.luvchocolate said:I had a leak on my gas meter found upon annual service.
I informed Shell and at my request got an ordinary meter
Ofgem has also instructed suppliers to develop procedures to fit smart meters under Warrant. This will most likely apply to households where the meter has reached the end of its certified life.
I like the fine idea, but it would need to be imposed only on those who have refused an opportunity, not those on a waiting list.
